I have an '83 200x. I was wondering if someone has any idea how much it will cost to fix. It slips in 3rd gear, needs front brake pads, the rear sprocket is loose, and the engine probably needs rebuilt.

slips in 3rd is the clutch 60 to 100$
front pads $20-30
sprocket bolts $10
piston kit and bore cylinder 150-200$
less than 250$ for top of line stuff = worth fixn

Wow, that's less than I was expecting.

That's what I was thinking. Hopefully I can get it fixed up soon. I'm thinking about buying black plastic for it too.

Have fun trying to find black. I dont think anyone makes it. You can check maier, but I doubt it. MAYBE someone on here has a set?
Your sprocket problem is most likely more than bolts, but tell us this.... does the sprocket move side to side (need new bolts), or does it rotate without the axle turning? My sprocket rotates about 1/4" without moving the axle and it is the splines on the inside of the axle adapter (that star-shaped piece that connects the sprocket to the axle with 5 bolts) that are worn down.
The engine "probably" needs rebuilt. How do you know? Is it smoking bad? leaking oil around the head? something other than 3rd gear?
I dont know how much it is to replace 3rd gear, I've never had that happen on my X. It may involve a new or used-but-usable countershaft and/or gearshift forks from fleabay. I just did a quick search on there and there is a complete running transmission from an 85 X that is $90 with shipping.
But anyways
Gaskets will run you about $80 if you go OEM honda (I strongly recommend that over aftermarkets)
My local shop does single cylinder boring/honing for either $60 or 80, I forget
Piston will be about $100-150 depending on overbore and brand (recommend complete wiseco kit through eBay)
Valves OEM will be $45 apiece, or you could go the vesrah budget route (do not recommend!)
I do my own valve lapping so I dont know how much a machine shop would charge you.
If you go to a high comp piston, i recommend powroll's high strength cam chain. It's $30 and it's worth the added insurance that you dont blow a chain and bend your valves and ruin your piston. Look at their website www.powroll.com for phone #
Brake pads are cheap, about 20-30 bucks.
That sprocket problem can be anywhere from $5-50 depending on the severity of the problem.
That right there is $465-590 WITHOUT a valve job.
It's your call.

Why do I feel like barnett after writing that? :wondering

Maier makes black plastics but they are NOT cheap. The rear alone is $216 by itself, front is $90, shrouds are $37 for the pair but I find that NOS ones can be cheaper. Shipping charges are probably going to run that up pretty good.

There is nothing wrong with Vesrah products.
In fact. Many manufacturers recommend Vesrah when OEM is not available.
Vesrah is the closest you find to OEM quality. Hands down. It's a proven fact.

I know a guy that can probably fix it for me. He likes to work on them in his free time. If I tore it apart I doubt I could get it to run again!

So you do the labor for free?:D:p
When it's for myself, of course. Whats wrong with that :D
I don't usually work on other people's stuff

I've never used them before, and still don't plan on them unless it's a last resort and OEM's don't exist.
When I originally said Vesrah i was including all aftermarket brands that sell things cheaper than OEM. Vesrah is the first name that came to mind. You just have to be wary of the cheap made in china stuff. Vesrah is made in japan I'm pretty sure

I fixed all my 200x motor issues with a full rebuild with all new bearings every one. total $900 with corrected kicker and back cutting of gears...oh and i added ported and polished head and intake to that number.

Bust it runs smooth like a new machine ;)

This is a rough estimate....To rebuild the motor correctly you are looking between 350 (if you are doing it yourself) to 800, maybe more (if you are having someone else do it).

Just bought black plastic from zmperformance on ebay. $181 + $15 shipping, rear. $75 + $10 shipping front. Cant find shrouds to save my life.
As far as project cost, as has been highlighted here, it really depends on the labor cost.
3rd gear, be more specific, does the clutch slip? (indicated by the engine revving higher than it should while engaged in any gear) or do you think the gear is damaged (noisy, may jump in and it of gear, hard to shift etc.) because that will also be a factor in the cost to rebuild it.
For $700-$800 you can just go buy another running X, the whole thing.

My dad had our old X motor rebuilt for way cheaper than 350....and it was BUILT.

But then again this is probably 15 years ago.

well your dads just cool aint he lol. if you take this motor to a shop no one will know wtf to do or it's issues. just rebuild it your self. thats what i did. rebuild to me means all new bearings and seals and bore job...not halfazzed rebuild using old crank bearings and rod bearings like a dealer will do for ya.

You'll be a grand into it easy!

Allot of that stuff doesn't just "slide apart" after all these years, ya know?......

I know it's not the clutch slipping. It's the 3rd gear problem that a lot of 200x's have. Like I said I plan on having someone work on it for me. I didn't grow up with somebody showing me how to do things. I would probably just mess it up.

How many teeth are those and any other specs?

A guy sold me a box with a few NOS ATC gears, no bags and a crapshoot but no good to me.....

20T on the mainshaft, 29T on the countershaft
Mainshaft gear has four "teeth" on both sides of the gear to hook into 5th and 4th gear.
Countershaft gear is smooth on one side and has four "teeth" on the other to hook into 4th

I just did a rebuild on an X this summer. I tore it down and put it back together myself. However, You might need someone to look at it. It might need more than just rings. I had to bore over and that means that someone else does that (labor cost). New piston, rings and whatever else. Also new gaskets and "O" rings etc. In the end it cost me in the $500 - $600 dollar range. Just be prepared, you never know what it might look like inside.

He also mentioned brakes, so I would rebuild that caliper and the sprocket is probably the rubbers in there that I think are gone.....

Wonder why 83-85 needed those but not 86/87? Maybe because not everyone adjusts them parallel??

I've decided I'm just going to put top end gaskets in it and see if that stops the oil leak. Then I will need front brake pads. Anyone know where to get some?
