2.5" stretch, gonna be e-start and manual clutch. Let's just say it'll be more engine than is sensible :naughty: and not lifan and not stock

All parts will be new or remanufactured, nothing left untouched!

Well this is the teaser thread. Lol

Sadly no, not going to be a crf230, although that would be sweet. Wanna keep the mounts stock.

I did investigate it though. :-P

Louis, is the slug in the frame in the pic above? the tank looks as though it is sitting on a stock frame, is this due to the larger capacity?

Louis Mielke
11-21-2013, 07:21 PM
This tank requires the 2.5" stretch. It won't fit on a stock 70 frame.

I'm toying with the idea of providing an "optional" set of tires along with the machine. It's going to come with Xowner 7" aluminum rims and stock size tires but I've seen some pretty interesting things done with go kart wheels and tires.

Just depends on how much interest there is at TF14.

Carbs only sitting in there loose, frame needs a little more clearancing to make everything fit perfect.

We have the 125cc piranha in Chase's 70. It's a good little motor and it's fast. 150cc is gonna be a handful! You will appreciate the electric start. We adapted a pull start on his and it's hard to pull.

I rode a lot of different set ups at the mad 70's event, some with 1 inch longer frams some with 2 inch ,but they didn't work as good as a stock frame for short track racing with go cart tires and wheels. My question is,has anyone ever cut the whole frame in half between the rear axle and motor, like a longer swing arm would be? That way you could slide it better and it would let the front end stick better.

Can't say I've specifically heard of anyone doing that, lots of work to cut and stretch the back half. At that point almost easier to built a whole new tube frame. Maybe the carrier could be cut out at the welds and moved back an inch or so?

Well I have been slowly getting things done on this build unfortunately it's been just that, slow. Between life and the fact that winter has been unusually cold for us this year getting much progress has been in bursts. I'm slowly but surely amassing more cool parts for this build

I do not have it in my possession quite yet, hoping to pick it up this weekend but I have secured an A+ front suspension setup from our good buddy blue27. That's right folks, this build has upgraded to semi-suspended! WOOT!

I've also made some progress on the frame extension, my pics don't show my full progress so it's come a bit farther than shown.

I've got the extension in, here's the frame sitting in my frame jig.

Pic of the foot pegs getting cut apart to be rotated,

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/projects/raffle%2070/356C0ED7-F6E3-4393-90D9-6AEFDA594E52_zps7ze4qhi6.jpg

Here you can see where the peg cross bar makes contact with the engine, most people make spacers to lower the pegs mounting plate and thus eliminate the contact point.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/projects/raffle%2070/287AE9E1-226C-4099-BC6D-4179917C082A_zpsyepmzgog.jpg

I personally feel cutting the welds on the cross bar and rotating the pegs downwards is a better solution. It allows you to decide how much clearance you would like with out requiring longer bolts or compromised mounting. It also provides more space for mounting of the shifter and access to the clutch cover on this particular engine. Otherwise you'd have to remove the pegs to remove or install a shifter and possibly the removable clutch cover.

It does present it's own problems though with the mounting of the heel guards but I'll be taking care of that later.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/projects/raffle%2070/9D382AAA-1F97-4CCA-883D-0247B82D766C_zpsqs2hngc1.jpg

Oddly enough I can't find the picture on my phone of them complete. They're done though and they fit the engine nice! Lol

A lot of these aftermarket engines slip right into 70 frame with no mods, while this monster was pretty closer there where a few points around the back of the engine that needed clearances. Snapped a few pics of those spots.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/projects/raffle%2070/79A51530-C563-4C52-9813-6E71FF89B2E3_zps4fkn61da.jpg

Both the upper and rear mounting locations needed clearancing to keep the frame from making contact with the engine. Specifically the upper mounts had to have their backsides reshaped to overcome interference. This was a bit of trail and error but after a bit I feel like I made the engine slip into the frame nicely without compromising the mounts.

Here you can see the head tube was prepped to be both plug and but welded. I at least think those are the terms, Im not a professional welder that's for sure. Lol I went through a nice size grinding wheel removing bad welds and redoing them till I was happy.

Or so I thought. I was wrong. After I picked up the A+ replica front end today (thanks Bruce) and did some test fitting I can definitely see that the tank needed to be lowered a hair in the front. The tank position will probably get tweaked some but it's pretty close as it sits now.

The fenders and seat are off my blue atc70, I snagged them temporarily for fitment and brain storming purposes.

The front end is only loosely hung on the frame without bearings but it gives a good idea.

Great looking build Louis. Have no worries about that motor mount area that was made to fit. I had to hog out quite a bit more than that on my 150 build and I have pounded that little fella on the flat trac for a couple years, very safe and sturdy. I really like the tank mounting. Looks like plenty more room than most builds of this type. Did you just move stock mounts up? Anyway....keep up the great work, awesome!!

OK, now I know why you sold me the pittster. I didn't even blink knowing it was from you but I guess I'll ask, is the pittster a good motor as well? I was happy with our deal but now I'm a bit nervous that you may have found it to be a poor upgrade?? and got a Pirahna instead.

Nothing of the sort DC, I actually kicked myself for selling you that engine after I decided to do the raffle trike. I almost called you to buy it back but I just thought that seemed too stupid and couldn't bring myself to do it. The quality of these engines is almost identical, I would go so far as to say they're made by the same company or at least from the same parts source.

Progress still seems slow by what I have to show but I'm making progress. The weather has been a yoyo so by about the time I can do something in the garage it's back to freezing the next day. I know I've said this several times but I'm really hoping to take this frame to the powdercoater next week.

Here shows the spring loaded chain tensioner I've been working on just about complete (needs the spring). I'll post more pictures showing how it was done in a bit but the main jist is that I turned a bung on the lathe, and used parts from a 90/110 to make the shaft, welded in the bung and made a tab for the spring to hook to. The old tensioner mounting holes/slot where filled in and smoothed so hopfully once powdered it will look oem.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/projects/raffle%2070/899D7714-20ED-448C-BF1E-38592D49DB5C_zpserz5pdxk.jpg (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/louis_mielke/media/projects/raffle%2070/899D7714-20ED-448C-BF1E-38592D49DB5C_zpserz5pdxk.jpg.html)

I also got the cutout for the battery made. The intention is to have a removable cover that encloses the battery, solenoid and wiring for easy access if needed. Two internal walls will be added on both sides of the battery to hold it in place and add strength back from the removed material. More work to be done but hopefully I'll have it wrapped up the next visit to the shop.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/projects/raffle%2070/C8C09220-E562-4AF9-98E2-A3CD5ED1DDFD_zpsa7syeyut.jpg (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/louis_mielke/media/projects/raffle%2070/C8C09220-E562-4AF9-98E2-A3CD5ED1DDFD_zpsa7syeyut.jpg.html)

More to come, should assemble quickly once the frames powdered, not much fab work to do after that point.

Well got the battery box finished. Took pretty much all the time I had availible yesterday but other than the bolt on cover it's finished. The hole that was cut into the side of the frame made have sacrificed a little bit of strength at first but one I added in the walls it definitely strengthen the frame back up. It''s not real pretty right now but once the powder is on I think it will look very nice.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/projects/raffle%2070/A2CF48BA-FD8A-48E6-9917-A542CC6085F5_zpsmsfpfhpc.jpg (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/louis_mielke/media/projects/raffle%2070/A2CF48BA-FD8A-48E6-9917-A542CC6085F5_zpsmsfpfhpc.jpg.html)

The battery hold down is a single piece, one end slips into a slot on the right, and then a single 6mm bolt holds the braket secure with a ear that holds the battery down ward. Still plenty of room to reach the terminals which was my main concern. Some more pictures.

Some wanted to see how the spring loaded tensioner was accomplished. It's fairly simple. I took the tensioner and splined shaft from a 90/110 and cut it down to length. Then I cut out and welded a dog ear onto the unsplined end of the shaft. The shaft is inserted from the inside with the spring and then the tensioner is slipped on the splines and bolted tight. It's simple but affective. The springs are from a hardware store and an extra will be included with the bike.

I have one last thing to weld on today, (the coil mount) and then I'll do a little smoothing and sanding and hopefully I can drop the frame and few other items off at the powdercoaters Monday or Tuesday.

wow looks great...got a question how much front suspension does it have it looks like it would hit the bottom triple and how do you have the front fender mounted??? also can I buy "chances to win" even if i'm not gonna be at TF and I am in OZ because I want it:Bounce

Louis Mielke

It is true. It will only have a few inches of travel. There's will actually be about another inch of travel than shown right now and adjustments are made internally to avoid bottoming but it is possible for it to bottom on a really big hit. The fender is being trimmed and will attached to the bottom triple so that the forks will clear the fender.

With this bike only being semi suspended you need to think of the suspension as more of a ride cushion more than it's real suspension. It's just the limitations of semi-suspending a atc70, I believe it's a limitation most people have come to understand when building something like this.

While most of these pictures do represent the direction of the build please to understand they're not final assembly/adjustment pictures. Some of these items where put on the bike mearly for pictures. Final assembly should be in the next week or so.

Ladies and Gentleman, I got to see this "70" in person today. I would highly recommend buy lots of tickets and soon. What a neat machine, to say the least. Got to hang with Milkman and a couple other members who were wiring and assembling. I got to hear the engine fire up and see the lights all working. It's bad. Not a kids toy to say the least. Lots of shiney bits and hand fit bits as well. Not simply a bolt together machine but a hand fit and hand massaged labor of love. Not many around like it, that's for sure. The lucky winner will have a truly unique machine that not only will turn heads, but run with the big dogs. Don't miss an oppurtunity to win this or you won't be happy. A special thanks to all those who made this possible. It sounds really great too.

Thanks for the kind words Pat! Was so glad you could come join us. Big shout out to Bruce (blue27) and Kain (whtcamaro) for some amazing wiring work! These guys are pros at wiring up these pit bike engines and accessories!

Here's some pics and a little progress picture. Remember, these are build in progress pictures, it maybe on 3 wheels but it's far from finished!

Well guys sadly there's not a ton of new stuff to see. I wish I had more exciting pictures but the overall look of the bike isn't changing from the last picture I took. My progress at this point is just little assembly things. I got the chain and spring loaded adjuster all mounted up and how it should be. I also drilled the front axle for cotter pins which I'll admit I completely forgot to do before sending out it out plating. It took some nerve and a very steady hand but I got it accomplished without out boogering up the plating and the threads.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/projects/raffle%2070/E48F75EB-31FF-485D-A388-B8D12CEA8F3E_zps6fjsxd4w.jpg (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/louis_mielke/media/projects/raffle%2070/E48F75EB-31FF-485D-A388-B8D12CEA8F3E_zps6fjsxd4w.jpg.html)

I'm waiting on the brake mounting plate from Mr. Derrick Adams, and the brake line then then honestly that will button up all the assembly.

Blue Line graphics are finishing up the graphics for this little girl and then we'll be able to call her finished. Here's she is sitting on the table waiting for the last few items.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/projects/raffle%2070/9029DEF8-115C-4AAC-B918-A88A8B917C65_zpsegzjqwhl.jpg (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/louis_mielke/media/projects/raffle%2070/9029DEF8-115C-4AAC-B918-A88A8B917C65_zpsegzjqwhl.jpg.html)

You'll notice the brake master has been added to the bars. Sadly I'm out of time and funding to make the foot brake happen. I want to badly but this project is already way over budget so a hand brake it is. Just a little over two weeks until trikefest, I knew it would come together fast but I'm definitely sorry about the timing, wish I would have had it together sooner. Still turn out to be a sweet machine that I hope someone is very happy with. Remember any of you could be the owner of this machine, need not be present at trikefest, we'll work with you to arrange delivery/shipping. Check out the 3ww store for your C.O.A's.

I really dig that big ass headlight, Louis. I know its gonna be even sweeter with some stickage on the tank and fenders.

I noticed there are lots of COA`s left in The Shop. Here`s some reason why purchasing some COAs is just good investment advice:

1) Sure will make somebody a really nice xmas gift!
2)Impress the ladies!
3)Give yer grandma a ride!
4) Sure beats walkin!
5) Entertain the neighborhood kids!
6) Nowhere near as embarrassing to ride as a fat girl!
7) you know you want it.
8) cheap on gas!
9) Benefits the upkeep of this here fun place.
10) Louis, and a bunch of other people, went through a lot of trouble, time, effort, and cash to offer up something really nice for a lucky member. It sure would be a shame to let the blood, sweat, and tears of these people go unappreciated because the COAs didn't sell out.....but who am I kidding? These are as good as all gone right?

I might get some more myself

Thanks for the plug guys! Definitely nice to hear the effort is appreciated!

A little update, no updated pictures at this time but I received the stainless brake line and got the routing and details worked out for it. The caliper mount has been powdered and is in the mail on its way back to me. I have 3 front fender bushings to turn on the lathe then as long as all the last little details come together when expected I plan to be installing graphics Sunday afternoon. With that done i'll break open a few cold beverages (more than likely Orange Crush, lol) and take some glamor shots in some sunshine, weather permitting. Maybe even take a go pro video of a little test ride down the driveway. So in sum, should be wrapping this baby up 100% this weekend! woot!

I would like to thank Louis,Bruce,John and the many others who made this build possible. I think it is great that we will have "special 3 wheelers" floating around in the years to come and they will be easy to recognize. Imagine 15 years from now hearing someone say.."Found this rare custom build 70 on the internet.....it was the 2014 Trikefest build bike". How freakin cool is that gonna be!! Those who had the hands on of this build should be very proud and excited that you built not just a custom trike, but you are building history.. Thanks for all your hard work, it takes special people to dedicate time and effort for those builds:beer. And by the way... I prefer to receive my blessing from Mr. Swinehart with a handshake at trikefest when I visit him every Thursday to get my COA's on:Bounce!! Save a few for me John if you can...

Well guys, there are a few teeny tiny details to button up but I'm considering this machine complete. The details that I'm going to handle do not effect the overall look of the bike so I'm going to share these pictures with you all today. Big thanks go out to our fellow board member blue27, aka, Bruce at BlueLine Graphics for making and helping me install the awesome decals on this machine today!

I also need to mention once again Kain (whtcamaro) and Pat (vealmonkey) for wiring assistance, flossy for the donation of the key switch dash panel and Jonathan (xowner) for the awesome wheels and tires plus assistance sourcing many parts. Derrick Adams also helped out getting some speedy powercoat done last minute for the build. Thanks also go out to the whole community here at 3WheelerWorld and other forums as well. The community by supporting these builds every year helps fund Trikefest trophies, port-a-johns, t-shirts, hats, our drag lighting system and a slew of other lesser known details of the event and even our forum here.

This build started life as a bone stock Honda ATC70. The frame was stretched 3 inches and a brand new larger size metal tank was sourced from japan. The machine is powered by the incredibly powerful, Piranha 150cc manual clutch, electric start pit bike engine. To soften the ride a replica of the old school A+ suspended frame front end was put together and was complimented by a 7" Honda CB headlight. The headlight really brings an old school duner flare along with the vintage inspired decal striping. A battery compartment was added in frame along with mounts for the CDI and solenoid to keep the electrical neat and tidy. A complete end to end wiring harness was fashioned using VintageConnections connectors and insulator boots; these are OEM jap spec connectors crimped on just as they would have been at the factory.A 87 atc200x key switch dash replica mounts a 400ex key switch adds a touch of security and a pocketful of cool keys for this cool machine. Every item was either replaced or refurbished. A large amount of brand new OEM hardware was sourced along side of the many re-plated items. A brand new seat, consisting of new metal pan, new foam, and a strong excellently styled cover provides a coosh saddle. To make sure the brakes were up to par to stop a machine equipped with a large powerful engine a custom rear hydraulic disk brake setup was put together, of note, this setup is completely bolt on and could be returned to OEM drum unit if it was so desired. The PRM grab bar mounted out back really makes loading this thing in and out of a pickup truck a breeze. To provide tool-less chain adjustments a spring loaded chain tensioner was added in place of the stock bolt on unit. The icing on this machine is the outstanding decals provided by Blue Line Graphics. They were developed with a vintage flare reminiscent of the old school pin striping present on so many hard tail machines out of the 80's. Whomever takes this machine home can be sure that they will have a head turning, smile inducing machine the whole family can enjoy.

Any one can end up owning this machine, need not be present at TF14 to have this machine.
