i recently purchased at parts bike for my 86 250 es it came with a spare motor, which is great because i dont really need another rider I only wanted a source for parts!
The kickstarter does not catch at all. when idling the motor maks a winding noise when running coming from that area. most concerning to me is that when pushing the bike around it almost seems to drop into gear. something catches hard. you can pull back just a little bit and free it up, but after not even a full rotation it catches again. anyone ever seen this before?

really. does that cause it to fall into gear? how big of pain is that?

There is a one way bearing under the centrifugal clutch on the right side of the motor. Its job is to couple the kicker to the crank for manual start. It sounds like the one way bearing is binding on the crank. Changing the one way bearing isn't a big deal. You will need an impact and about a 27mm socket to get the retaining nut off of the clutch assy. The nut on the clutch is reverse thread so be mindful of that. I would suggest putting a new bearing in as opposed to another used bearing simply because they are still available and they are a wear item.

so lets get this strait the one-way bearing is causing #1 the winding noise #2 the lack of catch o the kick starter and #3 the catching when rolling

Yup. Its quite common. Take note of the reverse lever position. I did one for my buddy a few months back and now he can shift right down into reverse. We haven't gotten a chance to fix it yet...
