Yes, You should look for any shavings in the motor. Most of the time they will stay on the left side.

Do you know why the starter gear broke? I bet I know. The one-way clutch. Very common problem on this style motor. ;)

Yes you will probibly find parts of the teeth stuck in around the flywheel.
I don`t think you would have to remove it but it is not a big job if you do.
Drain the oil and poke one of those small extendable magnets in through that hole you will see at the bottom of the crankcase behind the flywheel.
You will probibly pick up some small pieces of metal. Sounds like you had better check the starter too. They wear on the outside half. If you have to buy a new starter gear make sure you get the right one. They made at least two different types.

I would definitly take the cover of to get the metal remains out. Reason being is it most likely fell into your stator and will chew it it and deem your charging system useless. I have been there already and to replace a stator can be expensive cost. Also like Howdy said your one way clutch is probably what caused the starter reduction gear to break in the first place so check that also.
Keep us posted if you have any questions.
