What is the bet way to have the air filter on a tri-z? In the airbox or outside? And what kind of filter. What do you guys do for air filter mods? Mine has nothing special done to it besides a moose filter.

The clamp ons with no airbox usually work the best if you are limited to indoor tracks, or desert riding. Only problem is if you are exposed to any elements - rain, snow, water, mud, you are toast, and I cant imagine even riding under totally dry conditions. The TriZ airbox works pretty well. If you really feel more airflow is needed, the lid can be removed, and with the shroud over it, you sacrifice little protection. If you end up riding heavy rains or something, its easy enough to put the lid back on. Youll probably not see much noticeable difference between a clamp on, and and running an airbox with no lid.
Aftermarket foam elements trap more dirt, while K&N provides better airfow. I run a K&N with full airbox and lid. I am in Ohio. If I lived in a dry climate Id probably run a foam. Slip on outerwears are available for both, for added protection, which also results in the restriction of flow. Some guys who race without an airbox, carry outerwears to slip on in case of rain or muddy track conditions. They dont work as well as an airbox, but help a lot.

well i had a k&n on my x and it seemed to work fine, rainy, dusty, muddy, any kind of condition you can think of it was there, never seemed to get anything in the carb, much less the motor. i am going to be running a k&n on my Z without an airbox also, as the z wont see anything wet or close to wet, only grass, pavement, and ice (maybe some snow) should be fine for what im doing.

Will running a open filter make it run leaner?

yes more air getting to the engine will make it run leaner the same as if you put a better pipe on it if you go with a clamp on you will have to run it a little richer to compensate for it running a bit leaner due to more air getting to the engine.

unless your trike is running extra rich right now then yes id go up a bit bigger on the main jet id rather foul a 2$ plug then melt a top end
Yep, might have to up the pilot jet too. Start with 2 steps above where you are at now, better to run rich than lean.
