Some guy mentioned muratic acid and gravel shaking to remove rust. That product is available in UK as well.

there has been quite a bit of discussion on this topic. check this thread,
http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/160903-rusted-gas-tank-fix?highlight=red+cote
there are a bunch of others if you search in the little white box top right. type "creem" or "Red cote" or just "fuel tank liner".. i'm a red cote guy myself and i've had good luck with it. there are many schools of thought. good luck! nice 85 200 btw, really cool to see.

I would remove the rust from the inside with a good soak of Apple Cider Vinegar and then leave it... I despise tank coatings with a passion.

I was having a discussion last week with a local blaster who does classic cars, frames etc. He told me that the best way to deal with steel tanks is to have them nickel plated. He stated you could also paint the tank after it has been plated.
I then spoke with my chrome plater and he said no problem, they dip it first to remove the rust then they do the nickel process. I have an ATC70 tank that will get this treatment in the very near future.

I have heard of this as well, sadly i don't have any places around me that does plating but i would like to see how it turns out!

I have had a couple of bad tanks in the past few years. What I have done is take the tanks to a local radiator repair place. They sand plast the inside and coat the inside with red cote. The tank is now 10 years old and still haven't had any rust. The coating is only discolored from the 2- year old fuel that is in it. Other than that just perfect. The shop only charged me 75 bucks. Can't beat that!

If i had my tank nickel plated i would just shine it up, slap the correct decal on it, clear coat it, and leave it. They use to nickel plate everything in the early 1900's before chrome was invented. Would look sick. Might even do that now on a future build.

I know this is an old thread, but I just shot an email to the Plater I use to see if I can get the 250R tank I have nickel plated. I have to drop off a bunch of bolts to get zinc plated
so I thought what they heck might be worth a try.

Ive used the toilet bowl cleaner method (the works with 20% HCL mixture) it works well but is rather unstable..the best method ive found..is put a 3/8 brass valve where your petcock is..and get OSPHO..which is phoshphoric acid..You can get it cheaper at HD they call it metal prep..or Metal etch..It works best as it leaves a Zinc coating after draining that will not flash rust
.if your real cautious and are not going to throw gas in the tank anytime soon ..throw in some atf as it coats better than engine oil..and roll it around the entire tank every week or so until you get to it..as always wear your safety equipment and do not get it on the paint..

Apple Cider vinegar really cleans it out well. Then I would use Caswell Epoxy.
Por 15 is a pain, since the crap does not mix well and it is very hard to keep from pooling.

I was going to try that this week before I take it in, but I wanted to hear what the plater had to say first.

fill it with Evaporust. Let it sit 24 hours with periodically shaking it a bit. Rinse with water. use a little acetone to get all the water out and a compressor hose. The Red Coat. Did this 4 times, works great.

Por15 is a great product, but a little too good... Here is my reasoning why...
Did my 350X tank, had it painted perfect, crashed the trike. Ah shiza! Can't get the stupid liner out to fix the tank again!! From that point forward, I would either use Kreem or Red Cote. MEK and a power washer will strip those out again if need be.

The simplest, best, safest, cheapest, easiest to dispose of, rust remover is plain old white vinegar. Just fill your tank and let it sit for a day or so, drain and rinse with water.
