View Full Version : 1984 ATC 200X MX Racer Update 5/18/14 Westcoast Swinger Installed

Mr. Clean
10-09-2013, 12:40 PM
After the last MX race at Cahuilla Creek in Anza CA on a 350x, I decided to build a dedicated 200X Racer.

I got this 200x to race but it was too nice for me to build.

178655178656

So Mrs. Clean, YES Mrs. Clean went out and fetched these 2 200x's for me to build my racer.

178657178658

Tear down was last weekend.

178659

Last week had the frame blasted to bare metal, painted with epoxy primer and Urethane paint.

This past weekend I got EVERY piece of OEM hardware out of ~70 pounds of zinc plated hardware installed awaiting parts to bolt on. (THANKS FLYINGW!!!)

Polished triples and fork sliders.

86 200x Hub blasted and painted red

Sweet Fork Brace

Polished Yamahondaman fork caps!!

Got an extended axle from Frank Destra in Cali. Is this a finishline axle?

178660178661178662

Last night installed the 10 inch front rim/tire and white 250r Maier front fender, more pics to come.......

What's the plan for the engine mods?

THANKS!! and thanks for the deal on the supertrapp!!

The motor will be an evolution, No time for much in the way of mods by next weekend, so I am going to just go XR200 carb, and that exhaust. Over the winter I am going to save up and build a sweet bullet.

Thats going to be one sick bike. Even better that its a first gen, more aftermarket options. Probably cheaper too.
Your one brave man though doing this in such a short amount of time.

How's this coming mike?

Waiting for low pro fenders.

I had the durablue axle sent off for zinc plating. So the plater screwed up and chromed the axle, and proceeded to mess up the first two-three threads for the axle fade nuts. Have to find someone local who can re-thread.

Ordered the rear tires/wheels, should be here soon.

I got sidetracked with another trike.....will post pics of it soon.....

Hey Mike,
If you are interested, I have two fully rebuilt carbs that I am getting ready to sell.

The first one is a 24MM stock Keihin (blasted, fully rebuilt, comes with intake manifold, all gaskets, basically a bolt and go.)
The second is a 26MM Keihin carb (blasted, fully rebuilt, all gaskets, no intake, but I can tell you which intake works for that carb to bolt to the 200X. Its a nice upgrade). I can also jet these to your specifications prior to sending them out if you are interested in purchasing one.

oscarmayer
11-12-2013, 03:53 PM
he needs a 28-30mm carb. You can get 30mm carbs cheap off ebay. even some 28mm are not too bad. they are D/flat slide carbs so little different than round sliders. You would have to do some jetting work to get it to run the 200x. but a good carb will help a ton. if your stick do not go -past 26mm if you do not stroke or BB kit it, then stay at 28mm with porting, cam and more. if you do a stroker+BB and punch to a 235+cc then go to a 30mm carb.

I understand and I have no idea the mods that he will be performing to his engine. I just figured if he was interested in having a fully rebuilt OEM carb that fits with his engine profile he could contact me. Mike, apologies for the digression.

Had the axle chromed and they messed up the threads. So I spent about 2 hours wire brushing, picking chrome out of the threads and fixing the damaged ones. I then ran a couple old axle nuts with grease on and off until they seat fully. I am happy to report that its all happy now. The only issue is some of the chrome chipped.

Installed the rear brakes on to help keep the axle still when fixing the threads. Going to need a new brake line, maybe a 250r would work, will need to get one out of inventory.

Mounted up the front brakes as well and everything is happy there, will need to detail the master cylinder and install reservoir guard.

Currently I have 86-87 hubs on the rear axle and its wide. Will work with the setup when I get the final rims/tires. Might run first gen 200x hubs.

So little to do and so much time.

cant wait to see what you do with the motor!

The first iteration will be basically stock, cause I am out of money and time.......for the Ides of March national race.

Engine installed, exhaust mounted, carb mounted, wiring installed, foot pegs/ kicker / shifter / case saver/ blasted/painted installed.

Installed the Ohtsu R 901 Tires with Mitchell wheels.

Lots of hours of detail work done.

Today I need to finish up the rear brake pedal and linkage, and the paint the master cylinder. Need to get on the interweb and order a handful of things.

Have rear number plates decals coming and need to get another custom made rear brake line. Note to self, both banjo's need a specific bend before making the line. Other than that, pretty much ready for next Saturday.

Huge thanks to Chris at PRM. He hooked me up on a sweet deal for the engine skid plate, swinger skid plate and desert grab bar. They even welded on the number plate mount.

The stock swinger skid plate that PRM offer's only required some spacers and two new holes drilled to mount to this DG. Top quality products for sure!!

Purchased some decals from blue27, His repro decals are awesome quality.

13/36 Sprocket setup. Got a 36 tooth aluminum rear sprocket from Sprocket Specialists. I got a 35 tooth Helm & Son from shortline10 for a 200x and it would not bolt on!! Turns out this durablue is for a first gen 250r!

Got the front sprockets from Rocky Mountain ATV, primary drive 12 and 13 to swap at the race, and an o-ring chain. I run these chains on everything I own, very happy with them.

Installed the rebuilt rear shock from Suspension 101. George went out of his way to help me out.

WOW trike looks great. Cant wait to here ride/race report.

The 200x ran flawless at the race this past weekend. The wide axle was perfect, I was able to drift corners and not worry about the inside tire. The more I rode it the more comfortable I became. I found the limitations of the suspension and need more motor for sure, but all told the 200x is a worthy machine to race. I had zero seat time on a 200x prior to this race and look forward to upgrading and continuing to tune this thing every race.

This trike was built to race and be ridden and I rode it hard. This evening I got the chance to clean it up, and for me that is part of the process of maintenance for these amazing machines.

The question is.... did you WIN?

Tough answer for me to reply to so I will employ the two traits I think are most valuable in life, tact and humility.

I am a very humble person who values the opportunity to race trikes over winning the race.

Inherently people who race any type of motorsport are "in it to win it", but for me that type of mentality will quickly move trike racing the wrong direction.

I have pretty much come in last place in every race I have run on the 350x and had a smile on may face the whole time, maybe won my class as a party of one, but overall last.

There were many classes. I was in the stock up to 240cc novice on a bone stock 200x that I never rode anywhere but around my neighborhood. I had one other guy in my class on an 86 200x and the two other 200x's were in the intermediate class.

Also in our class we were racing two R55 fully suspended "70's" with 192cc engines, they were first and second overall in both races. First moto I came in second in my class, and fourth overall in the race. The second moto I came in first but third overall, so I won my class, but I did not "win". Sunday I won only because I was in a class by myself. Not much to brag about in either case if you ask me. Did I have the time of my life yes I did.

I did work very hard in the second moto to pass the guy on the 86 200x that beat me in the first moto. Chasing him in the first moto I could tell his stamina was dwindling. He also raced in another class so I knew going in that if I kept him in sight I could pass him. I did manage to pass him and have the sequence of photos. In some crazy act of God Mrs. Clean actually captured the moment. It was rewarding to set a goal and achieve it all while being humble and keeping what I am doing in perspective.

Did Mrs.Clean get a "Video" of Mr.Clean in Action??? Ol Deuce

The Mrs. did not think we had the gopro, turns out it was in the camera bag the whole time!!

So I raced yesterday at Arizona Cycle Park with four other trikers. This track is not nearly as nice as Cahuilla Creek in Anza, but its 1 hour away to race.

They put us out first right after watering and of course it was Mudfest. I figure they do this to make the track slick for the trikes and to get us to sweep the corners for the next 8 motos.

After the first moto

Is it a eastcoast vs westcoast thing that all the tracks on the westcoast are these huge sweeping tracks that look like you're doing little more than trail riding at high speed and eastcoast all the tracks are short and look like they're designed to kill people purposely?

Man I wish we had a track that looks that nice and smooth.
