These are additional 250SX articles I'm still looking for:
June 85 3&4 Wheel Action Magazine: 250sx vs 200x vs 225DX and
May 85 Dirt Wheels Magazine: Honda ATC-250SX hop-up article.
I'm not familiar with the Dec '86 3wheeling or the 3&4 Wheeling March '85 issues.

Even MORE important - what about the 86 and 87 model??

What was changed and why?? Except for cosmetics......

Did enclosing the rear brake drum, changing the swingarm and the carburetor to a Keihin QA 08 solve most of the problems??

Why was the CDI changed or the cam chain tensioner ??

I've never heard of any articles on the 86 or 87 but would love to see them and hear the story behind the changes. The 85 is fairly bulletproof and the newer models must have been changed for some crazy arse Honda reason!

:?

What are the main differences between the models?

Everything I listed in that last post is what I have found to have changed mechanically.

Best and most important changes were the carb and the swingarm/rear brake changes.

Swingarm bearing style changed also. But 85 86 and 87 all swap.

And I read that the reverse gear engagement dog has different splines.

Cosmetically there were lots of changes. Colors mostly but also the headlight was thinned out and made white.

They even went so far as to put 2 detents into the plastic housing for your choke, lights and start/run switch. It gives the choke "positions" rather than the 85 style that you just stick it where you want it.
