Can I just use gasket maker where the header and muffler connect, instead of buying that OEM gasket that goes there? Has anyone ever done this?

i used high temp RTV the black stuff. I use that between the manifold and the pipe for my 500 and will probably use it on the 310 when it goes back together. Or am i thinking of the wrong part here? are you talking about that rubber coupler?

Not where the copper ring goes, this part:
178190
Could I just brush off and clean the header part that inserts, pile up gasket maker, smooth it out, let it dry and then clamp it down? The one I had pretty much just crumbled.

Would not having one result in not enough back pressure?

It may do in a pinch, but I don't think you'll get any long term use out of that method. Those gaskets are still available to order from your Honda dealer. I bought one for my '83 200 not long ago. It was only $14.

: (. Darn. Guess I'll have to swing by sometime and order one then.
