Buying a trike tonight and not sure what the best bang for the buck is, need help. My wallet hand is very itchy and im ready to pull the trigger on something. im trikeless at the moment but have been carefully watchig craigslist everyday for months.Mint 85 200x, only and hour away , buying off 2nd owner , very clean all original. 1985 Atc250r , 2 hours away, all original looking , just shows a little wear. I would probably put a few hundred in it to make me happy . I'm a huge two stroke fan and never owned a liquid cooled R. Loved my buddies tri-z and my air cooled R but not sure which I should make the drive for first and if I should hold off and find an 86 R. Again everything is speculation since I haven't seen either bikes in person yet. Also I'm 6'4 , 220 lbs which shy's me away from the X but I would still love it as a play bike. I guess my question is, is the price of this 250r too good to pass up??177942177941

Price matters. If you're happy with the price/condition combo, buy the R.

If you buy the X, you'll buy an R next year so just buy the R now.

You say your a 2 stroke fan, you know if you buy a 200x your eventually going to buy a 250r anyways in the future like mentioned already. It also comes down to what kind of riding you will be doing, what kind of money you want to put in a bike, and price. A 250r requires more maintence and more money to run. The 200x you just put gas in and ride. Don't let your weight deter you from the 200x though. Other guys here will tell you that they are equal if not bigger and have no problem with it. Then again there is the 350x, you also might wanna buy the 250r now and wait to get a bigger 4 stroke down the road.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I'm thinking, just needed a little guidance. I think the price is right for the R so it's worth the drive to check it out. The big issue I have is I only have one free day a week to make drives like this so that leaves me limited to viewing bikes. I know if I bought the 200 I would still want a 2 stroke

isn't a 200X a bit tiny for you if your 6'4?:wondering

Whichever you choose -200X or 250R- At 6'4" you may want to look for a Hi-Flite seat. Especially if you get a 85 250r which has a shorter seat than the 86 250R. I am just 5'10" or so & get cramped up at times on my 85R. --Not many of those seats around tho anymore-unless youre in Cali.

Get the R!

IMHO, the '85 is just as good as the '86. Some say the frame is stronger on the '86, I can't say either way...

The difference between the '85 and '86 are pretty subtle. Personally, I like the thinner seat on the '85 better. And as far as the unique '85 rear end, 86-later axles mount right up as long as you use the '86-later rear sprocket.

Bottom line, in my opinion, don't pass up the '85 just because it's not an '86! :)

I'm your size and even a bit heavier..I found the 200x a fun ride.

But I felt the 200x a bit lacking..especially when trying to keep time with my buddies on bigger machines.

Now I'm not a 2 stroke fan personally so I went to the 350X to get the extra power I was looking for..

Bottom line though for a guy your size, 200X vs 250R..my vote would have to be 250R!!

If you get the 200x you'll like it but shortly you'll be wanting MORE!!

I would get the R for sure, especially for your size and weight. I've had an 86 R for years and got an 83 200x about 2 years ago, mainly because I had one as a kid and nostalgia took over. Anyway, while I love my X I'm disappointed in the power, even after quite a few mods. You can only get so much power out of an X--low to mid 20s--and you've hit the limit. A modded R can reach the mid 40s and that is without a big bore kit.
