83 Big Red Lighting Issue

1983 Honda ATC200E Big Red

My headlight and taillight come and stay on when the trike is idling, but the lights go out at a little less than quarter throttle. When I let off the throttle and let it idle down, the lights come back on. I'm not burning out any bulbs. I'm trying to figure out what's going on.

Currently, I'm using the wiring harness from a 1984 ATC200M. I have done the following to it:
- I have eliminated and bypassed the neutral switch and neutral light.
- I have eliminated and bypassed the key switch.
- I am running it without a battery.

Sounds like a bad rectifier/regulator. They usually seem to go bad when run without a battery for long periods.

Wow. It's only been 30 years, and who knows how many owners, and things are already starting to wear out.

They just don't make things like they used to. LOL!

The list of excuses to go through and rebuild it are piling up. Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining. Since the trike has lasted for 30 years, it should last another 30 years, after I rebuild it.
