had this 110 for ahile, seems to run from time to time, then be a real hard starter. sometimes i see black smoke, sometimes white.
i change plugs often as they foul quick, and when pulled shiny black (wet). i would torch a plug to get hot, and it would fire instantly.
so, off to the shop it went last week for a tune up, carb kit. and it ran for an hour or so, no smoke at all, but then the same ole crap.. Foulin plugs.
it seems to have a weak spark condition. so now i'm just guessin at coil, stator, or cdi...
and i dont have the proper meters to test any of this stuff so i guess back to the small engine shop it just came from
which charged $240 for the tune !!!
fun fun......

What year 110 ? Champion plugs are crap IMO get a NGK .
240.00 for a tune up  wow . Parts and labor can add up quick though .
Make sure the carb isn't leaking out the over flow tube , if the float valve is sticking it will foul a plug quick and cause it to smoke from excessive fuel .

The Champion plugs are crap.. Just plain CRAPOLA.... I can't count how many i had here that ran rough because they had a Champion on them. Pulled that out and tossed in a NGK plug and away she went no problems.
The plug should be a NGK DR8HS. Now if the plug is coming out wet and black its running too rich as well, but that could also be due to misfiring and the cylinder getting too much fuel built up due to the misfiring of that crappy Champion plug. Been there done that.
I would toss in a new NGK and run it for a while, drive it around a good 15-20 mins and get the motor up to temp, then pull the plug again and see what color it is to determine if its rich yet. Have you tried cranking it over with the plug against the head to see what you got for spark? If its weak and orangish/yellowish then its either the plug, which is why i said get a new NGK as well, or the CDI. I have replaced quite a few CDI's lately, its been an epidemic. 30 year old electronic parts just don't work as good!
You can get a NGK for about $3, so start cheap, try a new plug. The CDI can be had for less than $10, so again a cheap repair. If its running rich after trying it on a new plug you can adjust that easy enough.

yeah the shop labor here is $89 / hr !! so two hrs labor, after taxes, is pushing 200 clams.
thx for tip on the champions...NGK will be tried tomoro.
i remember the local auto parts store didnt have the NGK's in stock, so i X referenced to the champion, and bought 6, which i'm down to 1 left...

Check around, there is someone around you that sells NGK. The auto parts stores don't normally carry them though from my experience here as well. I find them at the local Runnings Farm and Fleet, the farm supply stores seem to big the biggest carriers at least for me. If you got a local motorcycle shop or ATV place i bet they have them as they are OEM for a lot of motors. Otherwise worst case you can buy like a case of ten off eBay for $20... LOL
Man i wish i could charge that, i charge $40 an hour labor for anything i do, and thats enough to make some people squeamish about hiring it out here.

yeah, an NGK did it...has it running great. a buddy of the gf's son was here too, and said it was getting too much fuel..( wet plugs ) so he dialed back the air/fuel mixture screw..he's a small eng mech... and works great.
so i've trouble shooted about 3 different things that needed attn on this 110, and on to the next one....but i'll start a new post on that one !
thx again guys, who knew champion plugs were garbage

Glad to hear that shes running good. Champion plugs have their place. In my yard work equipment. Not my fun toys.
