I want a smooth sliding, quick turning, agile dirtroad ripper made of my 85 Tecate. What are some inexpensive mods i can do to my chassis to make it handle like an old school TT bike?(oval tracks, roadracing)

I have a set of 22's for trail riding so a nice set of 18's is the first mod that comes to mind.

8'' rims and a wide axle should be all you need, and maybe a lowering kit.

Can't afford an axle, who makes wheel spacers for the Tecate hub?

Try www.durablue.com for wheel spacers as well as axles.

I did some looking around last night and I think something like this would work well. Nothing too extreme, just simple stuff.

Chassis
18 inch Turf Tamers on Douglas wheels
Stock style 22 inch front wheel
2.5 inch Durablue EZ fit wheel spacers(5 inch added width)
Plus one tooth on the counter sproket for top speed
Maybe a custom lowering strut or a shorter strut(not so simple)

Engine
Complete DG exhaust
Uni filter
Opened air box lid
Jetting
Redone top and bottom end

Any other ideas are welcome, this will be my summer set up.

You can get aftemarket wheels to give you added width too, If there arent many bumps, I would go with 18's on a 10 inch rim,(less tire roll).

I'll go with 8inch wheels cause the road gets rough and I'd like to ride some smoother trails too.

Does anyone know if an 86 Tecate strut will bolt into the 85?

lol you could have some one fat sit on it and when the shock is compressed you could then tie it so it doesnt go back up that way it would lower the rear end this would be a really red neck way of doing it but it would prolly work. i would never do it but if you are strapped for cash right now this could be of some help to you

If by strut you mean the uni track rod. Yes an 86 one will fit. You will need a washer on each side as the 85 is wider. I think 1\2" was the size I used to assult Patty Lebel.

There is a set of Dura blue wheel spacers on Ebay right now and I believe they only have a few hours left. Good price also.

The tie-down the rear end idea is not so far fetched. racers used to do that. i believe the pics of the cagiva 200 show a tie down cinching down the rear end.

I also suggest a +2 swinarm in addition to a wider axle or spacers. my 84 would completely spin out before it would high side when i was running a +2 WestCoast Swingarm, A wider axle, and 18" turf tamers.

Do you still have all these mods on your Tecate Jeb?

Nope, like a dummy I parted the trike out because the main bearings went out a few years ago. I only have a few pieces left of "ol' red".

This 84 Had:

+2 WestCoast Swingarm
+6 Axle
18x9-8 Nankang Turf Tamer Copies
8x8 ITP steel rear rims
DG Pipe/Cobra Silencer
Boyessen reeds
38mm Mikuni Flat Slide Carb
Vented Airbox w/ UNI Filter

Second pic shows what it looked like when I decide to part it:

New factor rear fender with Tecate/Uni-Trak decal
New factory gas tank with decals
Polished engine (but not running)
WestCoast arm and stock carrier powder coated white w/updated WestCoast decals (had a never used 84 westcoast at this time. sold it too :( )
I had put the stock rear rims back on with the 22x11-10 trekkers because I ruined one of the old turf tamers pulling it off the ITP rims so I could paint them! :D

I want to do another one, but I want to use a green 85 KXT.

You got rid of some hard to find parts and made someone happy when you parted her out.

If your green Tecate turns out like this one you'll have one sweet trike.

Thanks! I miss the red one.

I've got some screen number plates and a 85 disc & fork guards in green, 84 KXT hubs, a nice 85 front rim/hub/tire/& disc. If I can find a nice 85 in the future I'll have to shake the trees for a swingarm (cal-fab or westcoast) and axle. Also would like a UFO airbox (good luck there) and a bassani exhaust. in my opinion 84/85 tecates make killer race trikes with extended swingarm, wider axle, and 18" rears on 8" rims.

Yeah, I'll know that when the summer gets here. Since I'm not running lights, where did you get the screened plates?

....where did you get the screened plates?

Some from ebay, some from people here, and some from clearance sections. 8)
