Is it possible to change the transmission side crank seal without splitting the case?

Yes.

Both sides can be done without splitting the case.

I've done the tranny side myself.

Are there any special tools i need? How do i go about doing it?

Been a while and I don't have the manual in front of me but something like:

- drain the oil
- drain the water
- remove brake lever
- remove kick lever
- remove clutch cover
- remove clutch ?? can't remember - might need a clutch nut tool
- remove balancer ?? can't remember
- remove the crank gear
- pull the seal - be careful not to nick the crank or cases
- pay attention to how everything comes apart - as I recall, the kicker and kicker gears have dots you need to align. As does the balancer and it's gear
- put it all back together
