Why would the swinger have both brake setups for 85-86 brakes? Is this common? It came off of a 85 250R174005174006174007174008

I think that was welded by someone other than Westcoast my opinion.
My opinion is based on consistency of welds in pics you have posted, look at the welds on the front brake mount, and throughout the swing arm. Notice how clean and consistent welding was done throughout swinger but now you get to rear brake mount and welding looks different based on pics you posted, and this is my opinion, but should not take from vale of part!

I will take/find a picture of my 350X Westcoast brake setup... mine is set up like this one, so I might lean towards factory setup. But then again, 350X basically used the same carrier. From what I have read, the 85 and 86R's have different diameter rear carriers???

Looks factory to me. The welds are similar. Its tough to weld around a small stud like that. You cant do a continues weld all the way around. You have multipul start and stop points. Metal fab is a hobby of mine and I know how tough it is to do this small of a weld in a circle.

either way, it was a good mod, requiring no radical change to the swinger. More versatility. The weld bead does appear to be wider than the rest, but it looks like a good weld none the less.

After 25+ years I'm sure it has been added to accommodate both set-ups, I for one added the brake hose and E-brake standoffs to use the factory clips to hold these in place, otherwise they just flop around.
