I hate to ask this, because I'm sure it's been asked, but, I have not been able to find a definitive answer on it. How do you ID an 86 350x stator and flywheel?

I believe if the copper coils are sealed its a late 85 or 86 stator and a flywheel should be bought with the matching stator.
exposed copper coils is a early stator.
I was told their was a problem mid 1985 with the stators so that's the reason you see 85 stators in both versions.

Yeah, I've been having a hard time trying to find the '86 units. I want to run the 400ex cdi, and from what I've read I need the '86 set up. My engine is from an '85 (confirmed by VIN, and engine serial) and the stator windings look to coated in a grey(ish) material. Then, I go on ebay and come up with sellers listing the same stator for '85 or '86. The only stator I have found that has bare copper windings was listed as an '86, and the seller had the VIN in the description, which had the tenth character of G; making it an '86.
