View Full Version : Trike storage shelf modification
A few years ago I built a roll around shelf that I could store one trike on top and another underneath. It worked okay, but I really don't know how much space it really save having the legs in the way. It would roll around so I would lift a bike up on a chain hoist and then roll the shelf underneath and then lower it down on it. I then could roll it in the corner. This is a pic of it with my old TRX under it.

So I decided that I wanted a more permanent solution up out of the way that did not restrict any floor space. I disassembled the shelf and used the legs as the wall and ceiling supports. I then purchased a barn door roller track at the hardware store. I need to reconfigure the track and get it higher so I can get more lift out of the hoist. I had to slam the bike to the ground to get enough lift in order to be able to clear the shelf.

Now I can park the Big Red underneath and also walk under it.

nice idea! sucks to have to dick with it so much to get it up there. Looks like your roof pitch is gonna be in the way of getting the track much higher! Maybe fab some kind of bracket to keep your chainfall hook as close to the frame as possible. Not sure where the center of gravity is on the R, but can you rig it so the hook is near the base of the tank??

Very nice.
I think we all need a way to double up.
I just couldn't say no to an 87 sx so it's either the living room
or as a hood ornament..
Thanks for the ideas

I hooked a small loop strap around the backbone and got the hook down as low as I could to get maximum lift. I was actually able to max out the hoist on the way up, so if I could get the track another 4-6 inches in the air I think it would work a little better. This winter I'm going to mess with a new track frame and electric hoist. Problem solving storage-space with big objects like atv's, has become an obsession of mine lately. It's sometimes more fun than working and riding the bike.

I hear ya man! After dropping the 2 big reds off my shelf the other day, i need a better method!! I use the xtra long trifold ramp for loading the truck, it is just sooo steep!! I want to build a lift table that will raise high enough to just roll them on! Just gotta source a cheap ram thats long enough to do the trick!!
With all the steel you come up with, you need to mount a steel I or H beam to the ceiling and get a beam trolley from harbor freight. Then the hoist of your choice. Lift, push, lower and you're done.
An electric hoist is going to the next mod I make to mine.

You know, if you would just throw out the kids bike, the lawnmower and any other gardening tools along with those old tax returns in the filing cabinets as well as those “Most Improved” beer league bowling trophies you would have room for a few more trikes without all this carpentry work.;)

how about making the storage length to hold 2 trikes, then bolting 1 end to the wall with heavy duty henges, and the other side use cables attached to the wench. then put the ends that do not move with a holt int he legs from the ceiling and lift the other end withthe hoist, then put a big bolts through the hols stickign out to hold the weight and your done. now you got 2 trike storage shelf that is a ramp too all in 1 unit.
