Those of you that read my newb post back in May, know that I bought an '85 350x, which was just a burnt frame/forks/engine. I have posted pics of the engine after I tore it down. Was going to put it in a 300ex, but... Found this 2 hours from me Monday night, and picked it up for a $100!

With a little love, she'll be good as new! Gotta love these old trikes. They are iconic, like a John Deere tractor, or a Harley Davidson, and worth preserving for many more years of enjoyment. I like seeing someone get a good deal, and hearing the story behind it. You did well!

Thanks. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. It was a steel. Near complete '86. I just need to clear my Dad's pool table out of the shed, and I can break down the front and rear ends, so I can start work on the frame. Only two little cracks by the seat groumets (one shown). I've seen some of the areas that need gusseting. I've tried the search function, but, it doesn't turn up what I want. So... does anyone have pics of where to gussest this frame? I know of the 4 areas it needs right of the bat. Also, I've read about a member or two here that sells big bore kits. That still available?

Great pickup for 100.00!! Looks mostly original too. If you put that 85 motor in there, you may need an 85 clutch cable. They re-routed the clutch cable in 86 to the left side. I think the lengths were different.

Also, about the gussets. Check out the link below:

The damned headlight bezel is worth more than you paid..

Part it up and sell it you'd make $500 profit pretty easy.

Plastic, tank, headlamp, forks, axle, brake parts...etc.

Jackpot!!

And the "fencer garnish", too.

Great pickup!

"Fencer garnesh"? Idk what that is. Lol

No partin it out! Too solid, too many hard to find parts in good condition, and I've always wanted one. Even the suspension works! Only cracks I have found are by the seat groumets. I think it was a fairly low hours bike. Plastic is shot though. Front fender I can probably use, rears are super dry and brittle.

I have the factory manual, and saw the clutch cable routing. Probably going with the '86 routing, because it had the cable on it with the engine mounted bracket!

Just a little update to my old thread. Progress is slow, but there. This is pretty much what I have gotten done thus far. 75% of the TPC gusset kit is installed. Didn't get the frame completely clean of rust, so some welds got a tad buggered up, but, slowed down the wire speed some and they burned in nicely. Have 5 more gussets to install yet. Just need less back light behind me so my mask stays good and dark (gets hard to focus with too much backlight).

http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg514/patio88/1025131721b_zps80371396.jpg (http://s1241.photobucket.com/user/patio88/media/1025131721b_zps80371396.jpg.html)

Decided to completely cut off and reweld the brake master bracket onto the gusset. Not just cut a slot in it and slip the gusset under it.

Also had one rocker cover bolt broken in the head. Got that drilled out and retapped. Hole is off roughly 1mm, but will work.

http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg514/patio88/1025131720a_zps648992e4.jpg (http://s1241.photobucket.com/user/patio88/media/1025131720a_zps648992e4.jpg.html)

All 4 exhaust studs where broken off and seized in the head. Tried my metric and fractional stud pullers; no luck. Tried extraction sockets; no luck. Heated up the aluminum around them; no luck. Ended up drilling. Got the bottom 2 drilled today. Only a pilot hole for now. Have to drill them out a tad more to retap for the new studs.

Other news: Just got the call yesterday that my Powroll big bore sleeve has been installed. The cam has been custom ground in the .360-.370" lift range, and the rockers hardwelded. Once I get the studs drilled out, the head goes off for a rebuild and porting.

Thanks to several members here, I have a complete 85 R front end for it, conversion triples, rear fenders on the way, working rear brake system on the way, a killer skid plate, and front sprocket guard, and several other parts. Got a brand new pair of 20x10-9 ARTRAX tires for $100, TUSK wheel spacers, EDEL Quicksilver 36x38 oval carb, and much more.

Damn!!! Are they really that hard to find?

They can be. Seen them for go for LOTS of money. I got one hell of a deal on the roller.

The welds are pretty nice. I wish I had blasting equipment to clean that frame better. But, the welds have been pretty dam sweet. I just need less backlight so I don't loose the seem anymore, lol. I love this new Millermatic I got:) It is the sh!t.

The stock frame can twist, and they WILL break in several areas. The seat post base, the left side frame right above the swingarm pivot hole... Lots of factory seems that were never fully welded, only partial. Got near all of them taken care of, too. I'm sure the gusset kit will be fine. When I first got the roller, I noticed 6-8 spots that needed gussets right away. Then, DC put me on to the TPC kit.

BOB MARLIN
10-27-2013, 09:36 AM
I put that same gusset kit on my x. One thing they don't tell you is that the rear brake master cylinder won't fit back on now. You have to notch out the gusset to get the brake line to go on. Not a big deal, but it really sucked having to do that after I paid $180 for powder coat just to have to drill and grind though it.

6speedthumper
10-27-2013, 01:04 PM
Well if you look, Bob, I think they addressed that issue because the gusset isn't a true triangle. It's got a heavy V cut into it, with a hole for the brake hose (I'm guessing).

BOB MARLIN
10-28-2013, 11:30 AM
You got lucky then. Mine didn't have any notches or holes for the brake. They must have change the kits in the last 2 years.

Okay, I finally have some update worth sharing. Mocked up my 3rd gen R front end last week, with the tank installed, and found I had plenty of turning radius and did not have to move the tank back. Welded in a couple beads for steering stops to the neck, and called it done! Got it primered and bottom painted last night after work.

And painted the top side this morning.

After the paint dried sufficiently enough to work on it, I installed the ALL BALLS tapered steering stem bearings. I even went so far as to install a zerk to keep them greased.

While the primer was setting up last night I installed new ALL BALLS swinger bearings, zerked the pivot tube, and painted it grey. This morning, while waiting for the paint to dry enough to work in the frame, I bolted up the custom skid plate from Tapper190 (awesome skid by the way!), installed the carrier with new bearing/seals/O-rings/chain slider.

Just found out that there is 60 miles of trails a little more then an hour from my house. It's in Martinsville, called Outdoorsman Park. Going to check that out once I get the X done. Yup exactly!! I'd love to have done powder coating, chroming, polishing, etc... But, then I wouldn't want to ride it, and when I did I'd get pissed for every scratch, scrape, ding, and dent. On the trails I ride, it'll take a decent beating. Now, if I was to ride in a sand pit, or dunes, I'd take more time out to make it shine like new.

The R set up worked out great! Scored the conversion triples from a member here, got the forks, fenders, and caliper from another member... All worked out perfectly. Can't wait to ride it! Should pack a good punch from the Powroll big bore, custom ground cam, and ported head. Pluse the Supertrapp and 39mm FCR ;)

I did see Slade on riderplanet.com, when doing google searches for places to ride. I've heard lots about Busco beach, but, I just love the Hatfield-McCoy trails!!! Went there 3 times last year, and am going back again in May. Honestly, I have never ridden a 3 wheeler before. Other then test riding a 250ES I bought and had to resell :/ , so I have not ridden the GWNF on one. I do not think you are "supposed" to ride one out there, but, there are no rangers or park managers to tell you what to do and what not to do. You don't even buy your passes there, you can get them at gas stations. So what they don't know won't hurt? lol. It's not a bad place, but there are way too many speed bumps. Once they started allowing quads to ride it, they put in loads of speed bumps to control the speed. It's fun at first. After the first twenty minutes you're tired of them. Didn't ride there at all last year.

And that was one of the many reasons why I snagged it! It's too bad that the factory fenders were too brittle to use :/ The front fender isn't too bad, but the rear won't last but a couple rides. I did sell the mud flap to a member here. I wanted it to go to a good home where it would be used as it should be, instead of sitting on my shelf. Hated to do it, but it bought some more parts for mine. I've always wanted a 350X, so glad I found it.

Too funny about the TPC gusset kit! I'd have rather bought a kit from you to use as many member parts as possible. But I know it takes lots of time to do it. Which is why I bought, rather then made my own.

I'll do that! We've talked about making a trip down there. Just too hard to not make a trip to Hatfield ;) Oh, if you ever get to go, ride the Pinnacle Creek/Indian Ridge/Pocahontas systems. All three connect, and all have the best of all trail types. Pinnacle Creek is an absolute blast! Rock House is great but is a balls to the wall extreme ride. You almost don't want to ride it the second day. lol. Buffalo Mountain was cool, but, I only rode that once May 2012, and had two novice riders with us so we took it slow.

Unfortunately, I couldn't have sold you a kit anyhow because this injury is shutting down 6 months but I have upgraded my lathe and got a TIG welder. Before that, it was time.

Many new things in the mix once I'm OK and I learn how to weld aluminum.

For anyone looking to install these with a gusset kit installed, you will have to drill through the gusset for the one mounting stud to go through.

Hey didn't you know?? That's what all the kids are into now! Hahaha! What's really funny is that it was a random piece of wood I grabbed from the wood pile, and it put it at nearly the perfect ride height!

Haven't gotten around to updating this in a while.

Had my hyd hose shop replace the flex hoses on the oil cooler.

Complete bottom end assembled and half the top end completed. Getting damn tired of waiting on the head/cam/rockers to get back. THE only things holding me up from completion :/

Well boys, she runs!!!!! So damn happy to finally throw a leg over her. Had to grab an old Kehein CV carb off an old trx300fw I have to start and run her, but, running is running. LOVE the power of the 5mil Big Bore! That, and the CWR porting and cam. Runs extremely well. Now to get a 400ex carb since I don't feel like making the FCR fit under the tank and clear the frame. kick starting an 11:1 engine sucks, btw. That decomp lever doesn't do a whole lot does it? Lol. And, yes I did adjust it according to the manual.

You definitely had penetration (thats good squishy....).

Anyhow, it was RESCUED, not rexcued, just kiddin with ya bud.......

Ya know, Honda didn't make the best welds I've ever seen.

Looking good, any questions just post or PM us/me but your on the right track and looking GREAT!!

Thanks guys! Yeah DC, I had very good penetration. They aren't going anywhere, but, I could have done better. There's no porosity so I'm more then happy. So far I'm thrilled riding it! Really, really, like it. I've only test ridden a couple Big Reds. One customer bike, the other I was re-selling. This is such a fun wheeler to ride. Was really nice to work on a Honda again.

And, just a FYI to everyone here, the PRM nerfs are not made to work with the gussets. The only ones you have issue with are the gussets that tie the lower sub-frame tube to the lower frame tube (where the swingarm pivot is). They supply a steel plate with two welded stud in it on the left side, and an 1/8" thick piece of aluminum with two 5/16" bolts to clamp the nerfs to the frame. You need longer bolts on the right side, and will have to cut the studs off the steel plate and weld longer bolts to it. I made another aluminum plate and used bolts on that side, but, the chain rubs the lower bolt when the suspension squats over bumps. I'll try to get some pics up tonight so everyone can see.

Hahaha, I was drinking a lil bit when I wrote that. Saw it the next day and figured, what the hell, it fits lose enough. After all the bike is designated X. lol
