I would say anything besides a 250r/tecate/350x since you're a beginner
I have a nice KLT 200A, which would be perfect for a beginner. AND its for sale!

I think even for a beginner, that a 250sx is a great trike. My daughter is 12, had never ridden a trike before, and by the end of her first day riding, was tearing it up.
And, with a 250sx, its an all around kind of trike, one that you more than likely wont necessarily have to sell, to step up to the next level, like with a smaller trike, when you do get to be a better rider.:D

Honestly it depends on what you want it for. If you want trail riding i'd suggest a 200x. They have pretty decent suspension, good power, great handling. Sense your from MN as well, you should check out 200x's on craigslist. I saw one with a rebuilt motor for 400 bucks.. it looked pretty nice to! Whatever you choose you'll love it anyways, it's a 3 wheeler =)

Have fun and be safe on them! They might feel scary for about 10-15min then you'll be used to, you'll learn how to turn easy and whatnot.

Always wear a helmet as well!

Ok well if you want something to keep up i'd go with 200x for a beginner. They should go 55, if not stock, with the help of a little gearing changes it should for surely hit 55. That is if its not low on compression to. You can buy pretty decent ones for 500 and up. The one for 400 is gone I think. I had mine for sale for awhile but.. i kinda asked to much because I didn't wanna see it go haha..

you will find plenty of 200xs. they are fun, but you may feel cramped, maybe a 250sx add some racks and rip up the woods. dont see why you cant have a 350x...they are not that powerful and are about the same power as a 400ex which is not that much power anyway. just buy somthing you may want to keep, building or fixing smaller size bikes get expensive fast and if you like suspension do not buy anything with out it.

Yea like oldskool said you could always buy a 350x.. only problem.. there pretty rare in MN. I've seen a few, but i see more 250r's than 350x if that says anything. People normally ask 2 grand to.

I'd stay towards the 200x for a beginner. The diffrence between my 200 and 350 was phenomenal. The 350x was an animal compared to the 200x. I loved my 200x learning the basics of it. Then a guy wanted my 200 for his cosmetically ill 350. What ever you choose keep it 3 with a helmet.

go get a big red. 85 and up are the big boy bikes. trust me, a 200x/200s/250sx all feel like kids toys under someone our size. I was 250 and 6ft over a year ago and when I bought my GF her 87 250sx all i could think was 'damn this thing is little!'. The last generation of big red is bigger and better for alot of reasons. If you want to do more than play in the woods and feel the need for a clutch try the 350x out. Dont start small, just start SLOW. you wont be happy with something small, trust me

Yes, I agree, small is not always the best answer. Full grown guy with that height and weight, a 250sx or 250es will fit the bill nicely. The 350x will be a damn good size for you, if you don't mind a clutch and kick starts. Just take it slow, like everyone else has been saying. You'll learn how to shift your weight, how and when to lean, etc... It's really not that hard.

What do your cousins ride? That can have an impact on what you may want to get, since you want to keep up with them.

Another MN'Sotan! Cool..

In my opinion, anything shaft drive... 200ES, 250ES, 250SX...

350X's are rarer than rare up here in MN... I see plenty of them other people own, but none for sale. The most common big reds you see around these parts are 200's and 250's. Now here is the thing, i love my 200ES, but just so you know its a hardtail, no suspension but the tires. If you want suspension, which a larger guy such as myself also tends to bottom out, then go with a 250ES. Both are all around good solid trikes with a lot of parts available in the aftermarket.

The main thing is finding whats available!! But i wouldn't go any smaller than a 200. I have a ATC90 that believe it or not will haul my fat arse around but not at any record breaking speeds mind you... But i only ride that around for the fun of it. My 200ES on the other hand hauls buns just fine and i can keep up with guys on quads pretty good with it.

Thats a tough budget... Really.. You can find a beater for $400 but your going to have to look at around $600-$800 for a good one that you can jump on and go without a lot of time into making it reliable. I wouldn't buy a beater for under $400 and take it out without going through it soup to nuts first, chances are it will leave ya walking... LOL

I am about your same size. I have a 200es and it is very comfortable and has plenty to move me and then some.

What kind of features do you want? No suspension a deal breaker? With a budget of only $400 its kinda limited to just whats available.

i want whatever is available i don't care about features. i want a honda at least a 185s and doesn't need too much work. i know it is going to need some work.

Well, my advice is to just keep and eye out on whats available. Facebook, craigslist, word of mouth. When you find a machine, do a little research on it and see if its right for you. With a budget of $400 your going to have to pay attention to whats all wrong with it and what its going to need. You could get a decent machine but if tires are shot or plastics are shot there is another $300. I mean looks shouldnt be a problem if its rough but you still want it to function. Busted up and missing fenders wont help. Get a good strong running machine, you are not going to want to have motor problems and have to dump money into that.

Agreed... If you got a budget of $400 look for Function over Form... If its got busted up plastics, ratty seat, but decent tires and runs good, then the rest can be done over time as budget allows.

Watch out on the tires to. It gets darn expensive putting on even a mediocre set of tires, you can drop $300 to replace dry rotted tires! Craigslist is about your best bet here in MN. I see 185's and 200's on there all the time in the $300-$500 range that are decent runners, but more of the good ones are in the $600-$800 range. Thats down here in SW MN though, might be different where you are. If your close enough to Wisconsin watch Craigslist over there, lots of deals come out of WI for some reason. Down here i watch Iowa, i always see cheap ones coming out of barns in Iowa, just too far to go get some of them!

i just bought a 1982 honda 185s for $300 it needs the front brake handle and cable. he gave us a rear taillight from some four wheeler he had, the rear brake you have to push hard on for them to work. it runs great, tires have a lot of tread on them. the seat has no tears in it, there is a small piece of plastic missing on the fender. it shifts good. fun to drive and i have money left over to fix it. i will post pics tomorrow afternoon i didn't get any good pictures before dark. i was having too much fun

Sounds like a good buy! The rear brake probably needs new shoes, cheap enough to replace, don't try to just adjust it farther than it should be, those shoes wear down and the drum is a lot more expensive to replace then some shoes.

it needs both brake levers, mounts and cables. right now it only has the foot brake. it starts on the first pull sounds really good the tank is in good shape no rust and is fast enough for me.
