Don't have any place that sells race gas. Any alternatives that really work well?

Can you buy aviation gas? I think it's around 110 octane but I may be off a couple points.

Typical AVGAS (aviation fuel) is 100 octane low lead, PERFECT for a high performance ATV engine.

Racing fuels like CAM II are 110 and sometimes you can buy 114 at the tracks. But such high octane is not needed in a 12:1 engine.

And PS, putting 110 or 114 in your engine won't make you any more power.

I don't necessarily agree with using avgas as the octane ratings aren't the same as the ratings are for 30,000 feet vs. being on the ground at 1 atmosphere. If you want to read more about octane ratings I woud suggest perusing the article below.

Also, for 12:1 compression I recommend running VP C-12. I run it in my 218x flat track and it responds really well and I am running 13.5:1. I buy my VP online at the link below. Just choose VP C-12 under the leaded fuels option.

A friend of mine uses between 20% and 30% toluene with premium fuel in his vintage BMW and it runs great. Pleanty of info on the Internet about it. I'm with yeagerb on staying away from av gas. That stuff is made for steady low RPM use and not fluctuating high RPM loads.

Try your local Sunoco gas station. My local Sunoco station can get Sunoco 110 by the 15 gallon drum. Stay away from av gas. Vp is great and will ship anywhere.

I have a 12:1 350x and I run 115 octane race gas cut 1/2 with gas pump premiem. No problems yet, and I double my fuel for cheap.

If you keep it in a sealed metal drum and close it tight after every use VP says it will last for 2 years.

My experiance with VP C12 & C14 is in a vented gas tank, or plastic fuel cell is 2 months max. and God help you if you leave it in the float bowls over the winter. It also seems to draw water out of the air like brake fluid when left sitting even for a week in vented float bowls. When I was racing I would drain my float bowls before every event and the few times I checked it had as much as 5% water in it.

Below is VP’s std response however they say their shelf life is up to 2 years if unopened providing it is properly stored.

1. Do not store fuel in a plastic jug.

2. I buy a 55 gallon drum at a time pour unused fuel back into can for storage if desired.

3. Keep it out of direct sunlight and heat.


Some of the chemicals race gas is made with evaporate more quickly than the ones in gas do. Due to this, if left open [in a vented system] or in a sealed container that has a lot of air space it will loose it’s potency more quickly than gas just like a quart of soda looses it’s fizz to the space in the bottle when the soda level in the bottle gets low.
