Ok here it is in all its ugly glory, the fenders off my 74 ATC90.

Going to start repairing them and see how it goes before i write them off. Its been a long time since i have done this, about fifteen years ago i repaired a snowmobile hood, it was painstaking work that took me weeks, but it turned out pretty good in the end. These fenders are no different, but the problem is someone else did shoddy work on them before me. They used caulk, some kind of roofing tar, and god knows what else, so cleaning it up just to attempt repair is the hard part.

I got one side ground and sanded down and started laying some resin and glass on it to layer it back up, took a while to grind through the crap on it and then make a proper prep job to lay in a patch but its coming along, this is the easy side though sadly. The top will have to be ground along the crack to make a filet to fill in and make it strong, then some marine grade filler will patch it up and prepare it for paint when thats done. It will be a long road, but overall i think i would rather repair then replace and try to keep it original.

The seat foam is ok, needs a new cover, but the metal pieces that are under the folds of the cover and rotted and nearly gone, i don't even have enough left to pattern off them to fabricate new ones. Anyone have some suggestions or pictures of the original metal pieces that should be there?

I will have to look, i spent a couple hours trying to find them with no luck. I see a fiberglass seat pan on the 3ww shop but thats just the back portion of it not the front pieces, i would rather have plastic then fiberglass so that i could staple the cover to it in a few spots but i haven't been able to find a plastic set yet!

If anyone knows of a source let me know!

I have a 74 that had a pretty lousy (but better than yours) fender that I was going to try repairing. I figured by the time I bought all the supplies and all time invested it was smarter to by a new fiberglass repop. I got a real nice front/rear set off eBay. I'll see if I can dig up the sellers name. They are real nice and pretty inexpensive.

Edit: seller was jdcarlson234

I have all the supplies, matting, resin, filler, etc... So i figured might as well give it a shot first and go from there. I will contact that guy on eBay though as a backup plan, i see by his feedback he was selling rear fender repos for $115 plus shipping. But i cant look at any of those auctions because they were way back in Feb. He sold some ATC70 fenders more recently though.

I figured give this a shot see if i can make them solid again, if not then i replace them, nothing ventured nothing gained!

The cracks on the one side have been filled back up level with three layers of mat and resin, starting to piece together the other side one crack at a time so i can get structure to work off of.

The other side... Its not as bad as it looks, i have some solid structure to work and layer off of now. I will finish grinding and sanding the crap off of it along the seat edge tomorrow, have to get more sanding drums for my dremmel tool so i can get into that narrow gap and get it down to clean fiberglass.

Lookin good. I also tend to fix what I have if I can. When your done they should look nice and be stronger than factory.

I fixed one that looked about like that too....Maybe worse.. I ran mine over with my 69 F-250 4x4 on accident. I parked it in front of the truck, got distracted, went inside for awhile and then had to leave in a rush for something.... Forgot all about the 90. Up the peg onto the fender and right down the other side. Pretty much a clean break all the way through along that whole side. Only thing that kept it together even a little was the metal strap running the width of the rear that had been added to slow up and reinforce some small existing cracks.

Is the 78 and 74 seats the same? I'm selling one off a 78 (was on hold for an interested local buyer, but no contact in 3 months now). It is the complete setup with seat and all if you are interested. Fenders have a small crack starting at the corners of the seat, seat is OEM, but the seams are pulling apart. Also have a nice gas tank no the outside, but the inside is rusted up from the same machine.

Either way, looks like your getting progress on the fenders, never done fiber glass myself but it seems simple. Just the finishing takes a long time.

Looks like a great start. The last time I fixed one I backed all the breaks up with thin aluminum sheeting and rivets. Here's the post http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/130250-My-First-Attempt-at-a-Fibreglass-Repair?highlight=fender

Not sure if the 78 seat is the same, but i am pretty sure it is. How is the pan and straps, the metal parts that mount it to the fender. Thats the problem on mine those pieces are literally gone, like dust...

Thanks for the comments guys, i am by no means a fiberglass guru but i can do a decent job of it. I was looking at those aluminum reinforcement plates in the 3ww store, not sure if i will buy one or make one, but i like the idea. I have a piece of aluminum diamond plate that i could use to make one if i got ambitious.

Just old age and lots of hard riding i guess.. But the bearings are all good, and the frame is perfect, so its like how did the fenders get that bad when the rest is so good? Even the bottom edge of the fenders is good, normally thats where you see a lot of damage, not on this set!

Fiberglass isn't as forgiving as plastic though, hit something and you will crack it.

I'll have to get you some photos. Last person seemed really interseted in them for $100. The Straps over the seat are fine according to my memory. I never removed the seat so I'm not sure what kind of shape the pan is in, but the rest of the 3 wheeler was in pretty good shape with just about no rust. I don't think the seat has any rips in it, just the seams came apart.

74 has the 2 metal plates in the front and the rounded plate at rear. I used 90crazys plate for the rear and just made 2 sheet metal plates for the front

Is the the repo fiberglass seat pan on the 3ww shop??

Edit...

I see ATC Heaven has both the repo seat pan as well as the repo seat mounting plates for the front. I will have to take a close look at my foam, if its ok i might just order these parts from him and get a new cover and get er done!

He is in Australia huh? What kind of shipping time if anyone has ordered from him?

Well today it got primer and paint, a nice shade of orange. Maybe just a bit lighter than the stock orange but close enough, i plan on repainting the tank, forks, headlight, probably later this fall.

ATC Heaven is a great guy to deal with and he communicates very well but delivery time is about 3 weeks from my experience from him . You can buy the rear pan from 90crazy and just use 3 snaps on each side for the front lowers like they did back in the day . Don't even bother with the 2 steel plates . Marine grade snaps work great .

I added a picture of one of mine with snaps so you get the idea , this one was done 30 years ago and still holding up  .

I saw that too in the picture, went and looked at the fender and don't see it, i think its an optical illusion caused by the trees overhead and what the phones camera picked up? Thanks! I am very happy with the final product, you know darn well i'm gonna ride this puppy, so i wasn't looking for a factory correct resto or anything.

I will check out the seat on Dr ATV. I must be keeping that guys lights on this month, between parts for my 90 and another friend i am helping we have spent our fair share his way. Thats a nice looking 90! What year is yours? My tank and fenders were a badly faded orange, but i swear my forks and headlight are red, but the way these forks can get bent someone might have swapped the front end in the past.

Good tip on the snaps! I never thought of that. I got an email from ATC Heaven today saying the seat pans are out of stock and he will start making more next week, so i might be waiting a bit, but thats ok, i don't even have the motor back together yet!

This whole project has taken a huge change....

The 74 fenders I just repaired are going up for sale if anyone is interested.

I just scored a nice set of early plastic 110 fenders including a really nice seat with a nice Ceet cover on it. Really excited!!
