So I was doing some more experimenting with rim fit for the SX..I found a rim that is a perfect fit for the trike without the need to spacer to get the offset right.

Anyone wishing to improve the look and handling of their machine can use this with good assurance of fit and visual appeal..

170993170994170995170996

This is the one I bought from Rocky Mountain ATV and it cost around $100 shipped..

Rim: 4/110 ITP Steel Wheel 10x5 2.0 + 3.0
Tire: Kenda Bear Claw ATV Tire 23x7-10

Of course you can play around with any 10" tire that suits you, but this a great way to get some selection because the 8" tires are scarce and don't offer a lot of selection.

Front end swaps are a pain and finding a decent 200X or other front end from a scrap trike is difficult..this way is pretty economical and make the SX a totally different machine to operate..

Have fun with it..!!

Oh yeah, mount your tire with as a right side tire to get the directional tread correct.

Yeah, I've considered the Yamahas I've had in the past..

It's that confounded 3 bolt hub that stumps me!'

doug, i must have missed this when you posted. I never made the spacer for my sx front that I got from Rocky Mountain. Its just sitting. i wish i knew about this wheel before, because i spent about $100. would have been an easy transition. maybe i'll see about a return.

Nice post Doug, This got me thinking, so I ordered the same tire you did and then this:
http://oemcycle.com/Item/product/900040822 for the wheel. I mocked it up with spares and found I had to mount it as if it were a left side wheel with the air stem on the brake side, but it worked out nice. Spacing was balls-on.

Yup, air chuck fit in fine with the rubber stem the wheel comes with, air gauge is a different story- have to get a pen style gauge.

I thought I'd be a superhero and asked the tire guy if they had a stem with an angle to it, maybe a compact design- they did and I held it up to the rubber stem eyeballing it and said to put it in. I can still get my air chuck on it, but if it were any tighter fitting, you couldn't get air into the tire. So if you're considering going this route, be happy with the stem the Douglas comes with.

Looks nice 'Dave Little'..you can swap out the rim to any style you want. That is what is great about the formula I found..but.

You ordered the '3+2' rim..if you ordered the '2+3' rim it would have fit as a right and had the valve on the other side.

The devil is in the details!!!

It sure is! I kinda like it on the brake side, stem is well protected. Just wished I'd stayed with the rubber stem, more forgiving.

Honestly, I haven't had it out for a ride yet, so no idea, but sitting on it it does have a lighter overall 'feel' to it I guess, steering is easier too. Time will tell.
Footpeg= broken forward bolt, half drilled out with a broken Lisle super out sheared off. I gotta pull the engine and drill from the backside with a 90 degree drill, or I may gently grind the welds to pop the threaded sleeve out of the frame and TIG in another from a roached frame, we'll see not looking forward to it. Rest assured, it will not be a through bolt, or welded- that would be against my religion!

Ohtsu P/V something or other. 22x?-9 Got 'em on Ebay- ad said they were stock for a TRX for that same time period. I like the way they ride, real nice.

front rim AKA 87 trx250x front wheel for those wanting to do this. I seem to like the fatter front tire on these jobbers.

I gotta get me another one of these machines! I really loved mine with the 200x front end and ten inch wheels on the back.

I have much more confidence riding on a muddy/sandy/bumpy trail at a decent speed that when I come to the next corner that front wheel is gonna stick to the line..I have many trail hours on this configuration on both my SX(s) and ES(s).

Major difference with this over the fatty!!

Too each his/her own I guess..

A few of my others with similar configuration.

Since most of your weight is sitting over the rear suspension, I myself found that the rear tires I changed up to had more impact on this..for example the Bear Claws I installed on my 85 took the cushion out of the ride compared to the OEM I'll tell you.

Thank god for the rear suspension..I don't think my back could handle it were it not for that.

The front change up didn't noticably change the ride quality..

well, after about a year of moving this thing around my barn i finally decided to mount my front tire. it was a bit of a comedy of errors in ordering but i got everything worked out and we're good to go. i rode it today for the first time and it is a huge improvement over the factory tire. I couldn't believe the difference!

When i ordered, I got the offset backwards. this caused two problems. 1, the valve stem was on the brake side and 2, the thickness of the wheel mixed with the incorrect offset caused me to be about 3/16ths off center. I put a stubby valve stem in and I can get at it no problem. Problem 1 solved. For prob 2 I put a 3/16ths spacer and Im good to go. I like how it looks and how it rides. The only thing i'd change, I think, is that i'd swap from the bear claw up front if i had it to do over. I'd probably get a front max type tire. its early though, and the jury is still out. well see if the bear claw shines in the snow and slop.

If you ride in the mud and rough terrain I do the Bear Claw will win you over.
