85-87 Big Red Front Fender Mudflap Rivets

I am wanting to swap mudflaps between fenders on my Big Red, but the original parts fische show that the pop rivets were not sold separately. I'm looking to see what have some on here used for OEM looking rivets?

Mine look like big head flat screws into some sort of
threaded tube and very rusted.

Damned if I can find it,but this has been hashed out before... I can't remember,but I think the answer was a rivet,,,then paint it black.. :(( . Although it does seem like some genius HAD found something VERY close to Hondas.. Sucks getting old lol. I searched it 3 ways,and couldn't find it.

Same here Bill, I looked and couldn't find anything. I'm going to just use a rivet close and call it done. This isn't a show bike.

maybe some sort of boat cover / tonneau cover fasteners?
flat heads with fat threaded washer types. The holes in the flaps seems to be rather large, maybe 5/16"?

I do believe someone posted about the rusted fastener fix but maybe it was for the
black splashflaps on rear fenders.

Those are most likely the correct screws. Photos would be helpful. I know exactly what the OEM screws I am thinking about look like, just want to see what you are referring to and what you have.

Well here’s one answer for you anyway, lol.



If you are looking for the parts listed below there is a few different ways to go about achieving it.

The 86 OEM parts fiche below shows all the screws etc. listed separately. If you tell me exactly what you want I can probably tell you the closest available part to it. Some of the mud flap screws and nuts are available.

The two different style of nuts used on the rear mud flaps are called square or rectangular nuts and rectangular flange T nuts, lol. Similar is available at industrial hardware supply stores, Mity Mite brand from catalog at Kragen, Checker auto or similar, Hilco fastener and Grainger. You can also get the round flange T nuts from the hardware store, grind two flats in the sides and either flatten or remove the “pointed” tabs.

The rear mud flap screws are basically a type of “slotted pan head screw” Similar is available at industrial hardware supply stores, Mity Mite brand from catalog at Kragen, Checker auto or similar, Hilco fastener and Grainger. The set up is similar to “Binding screws and aluminum screw posts ie “book binding screws” See link below.

The side mud flap screws are called “phillips head shoulder screws”. If you can’t find the shoulder screw it can be replicated by using a std phillips head screw then getting a thin aluminum sleeve the correct length and od and simply slipping it over the screw. Avail at industrial hardware supply stores.

I bought a plastic pop rivet gun at Harbor Freight and the rivets in the kit (one of the many sizes included) was just about identical to the factory honda part.

I bought a plastic pop rivet gun at Harbor Freight and the rivets in the kit (one of the many sizes included) was just about identical to the factory honda part.

OK, FRONT, FRONT FRONT, I got it now, lol. Well some of the info I posted might help anyway however if someone shoots me a CLOSE UP photo of the plastic rivets top and bottom side I can find a similar if not EXACT replacement. whether they have a rivet in the center or not they are available from Mity Mite at Kragen and Checker auto etc, Broken Arrow products in Oklahoma [rivet type only] and Hilco Fasteners. I've used many of both types. They come in different head sizes.

There is a bit more info in that thread. Specifically, looked like the 5mm x 15.8mm rivet was a good match.
