Well I picked this up the other day, http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/mcy/3804829839.html
Flipped the swinger back around and got it sitting right, then tore it apart :) Gonna go through it fully and clean/powder coat/replate everything. My goal is to have it near mint, but it will never be mint because I have every intention of riding the piss out of it. Well on to pictures

And how it sits for now, until my schedule stabilizes with having a child. So I will definitely be able to take my time with it and really let my efforts show.

Going to redo everything the correct colors, 300ex or tusk hubs to run aluminum wheels, and other bits. Not really planned out yet because I know little of what can be done with these. So I have some questions..
1. What extended swingers are available? Looking for a couple extra inches, nothing crazy.
2. What type of top end mods are available? Big bores, mugen kits, full engine swaps?
3. What is the likelihood of me finding a narrow tire hub adapter? Would it just be worth it to get a 200X front end? Should I just keep the fat tire? Don't really care for it, but it could grow on me
Thanks for any answers!

Oh boy, out of all the 1st gen 250r's that have been posted for under $400 this past year you chose this one.... Good job and good luck saving this one though :beer

I traded for it, so ultimately $100 investment on my end, not too bad I would say. No way I would pay $350 for this pile. At the worst, I can double the $100 parts maybe :) But I like to think I am pretty handy with the machines, my TR200 started out worse than this. Both the 200X and TR200 turned out to be fairly nice riders in my opinion. I don't really have any worries about this one. Almost everything is there, and the parts that aren't are plentiful

skys really the limit for how much you can do one of these up
swingers are still available, but not new. you can have swingers made, but they pop up on ebay pretty often. look for these brands: westcoast, calfab, JSC, DG, Durablue, DICO, PK Racing, S&D, Terrycable, Force, etc
these motors have LOTS of potential. porting, polishing, milling of the cylinder head, decking of the top of the cylinder, aftermarket cylinder heads (DG, FMF), piston mods, 300R kits, 360R kits, kustom kraft 290 kits. aftermarket reeds (boyessen) and aftermarket reed cages (mossbarger), aftermarket intakes (H&S, DG, Sand Scorcher, Rockycycle), aftermarket pipes (bassani, answer, dg, klemm, coffman, WFO, IIIB Lightning, Bills, and others), carbs from 27mm-40mm
i happen to have a narrow wheel tire hub combo specifically made to put a narrow front tire on the 81/82 250r using the OEM triple clamps and forks. i dont plan on letting it go.
i have done the 200x front end swap. it just doesnt look or feel proper to me. i swapped back to the wide front end and havent been happier

I would stick with the wide front end. If my 82 had a 200x front end on it I would either sell it instantly or put a wide front end back on. IMO just looks awesome!

I'd run a 200x front end, you really have no options as tires for fat tires and with a 200x front end you can get maybe 4 different tire choices, plus you can swap hubs and run new 250R rims for quad tires with about 100 tire options.

Well, just to keep it correct for the time being, the fatty will stay. Thanks for all of the input already!
I have been seeing a 480 swap.... Anyone have a link to a good build thread on it? Thanks!

Hey mike. Looks good so far. My first rebuild was an 82 250r. I still have all receipts and it was a ground up refurb just like you want to do. At the time I had access to a powdercoater so that was all free, but the rest cost me about 3k when it was all said and done. Keep the fatty front end and take your time. If you build it correctly these foolers can have neck snapping powerbands.

Im using a 230 quadsport rear rim on the front of my 81 250r.Im using a 82 front hub.I also have a 85 quadracer rear rim for it.The quadsport rim is 9 inch and the quadracer rim is 10 inch same bolt pattern.I had to file the rims in four spots to fit the hub.The center hole is slightly smaller.

In case you're interested, I have some stock parts for the '82; Stock exhaust (including muffler) nearly mint condition, the red pipe heat shield (not the one on the pipe itself but the red one under the tank), taillight lens, a couple of other pieces.http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv159/4x4van/ATV%20parts/PICT0380.jpg (http://s679.photobucket.com/user/4x4van/media/ATV%20parts/PICT0380.jpg.html)

Alright, I have gone through the parts. Engine will be no good like I figured, also need a gas tank and wiring harness. I haven't dug around much yet on engine prices, but what are some available swaps or good engine sources? I think I am definitely wanting more than 250cc's for this build. Haven't found any good first gen swap threads yet to know what I can do. Or would it be better to just do a big bore on a 250? Thanks for the suggestions and comments so far

I did end up finding that one last night. Looks like a seriously easy option! The hunt begins... Who wants a first gen 250R bottom end and an '86 fat cat engine? Both need work, I need 480 :)

i think thats the best one I have seen on the 480 conversion. Your best bet is going to be finding a cr480R bike around and buying it whole; you will save money and be able to yank the electronics, carb, motor, and small related parts needed. I keep pushing my sisters bf to swap his 83/84 R to a 480, looks like an awesome conversion! I am in for updates, esp if this pans out as a 480!!! Good luck man, and congrats on the family!

Hey Mike...I don't know if you checked out that thread that Jason just posted but holy crap! I would contact that guy in france to see if he can get you another set of those mounts made! All you need to do then is find the powerplant and stayed tuned to how that guy realigns the kicker and you are good to go my man. Thanks for sharing Jason! I don't know how I missed that conversion thread.
Edit....check that comment on the engine mounts.....he used a second gen frame :( I don't know how different the mounts are, but I would imagine there is quite a bit of difference.

Mounts will be easy to make at the shop. I don't have big machines, but I have learned some tricks over the years :) not sure if I want to extend the kicker out or just remove rear plastics to start it.. If that is even possible.. But I think it will since the swinger will be longer as well. Don't really think I want to crack the throttle open on a 480 with a stock first gen swinger haha

Well I jumped on it sooner than expected, got the frame and forks back. It was spray painted some nasty brownish red. All fixed now. Still gotta fix the nut on the stem, looks rattle canned also
http://i708.photobucket.com/albums/ww84/96RedCav/IMAG0145_zps78a90722.jpg
My wife is not thrilled about it in the living room :) Now for little things, I am getting all new hardware for it (not the eBay kits, piecing it together myself), polishing some bits, and finishing the swinger, axle, and rear shock. Unless I get a good deal on an extended swing arm, then stock it will be.
And now that I look at it, I see I put the forks on the wrong sides and backwards :D

The mounts should be in the same location between 1st and 2nd gens. My 82 has an 84 power plant and nothing looks "hacked together.

The 81-84 engines are the same with the shifter shaft on the 83-84 being shorter. The 81-82 engine mounts and cradle is totally different than on the 83-84.Its alot harder to put a 480 in a 83-84 frame than 81-82.Bigbore has the 82 frame with the 480 in it. He used to sell the kit he designed and modified pipes.

Is it an aluminum adapter plate from the 4-130 OEM hub to the larger 83-84 rim size? My 300R Ice Racer came with one. Pretty simple plate if someone wanted to CNC...
