Hey guys, last week I saw this posted on my local craigslist, and this past Saturday I went over and picked it up. Its pretty ugly, and looks to have had a hard ranch life, but it runs pretty great, and for the $180 I paid for it, and the cool little dump trailer, I cant complain.
I have a pretty long list of things that are either missing, or broken that I need for it, and will be making a wtb thread over in the classifieds in the next day or so.

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t73/dalbey58/Honda%20atc/20130525_141831_zpse7fdf141.jpg (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/dalbey58/media/Honda%20atc/20130525_141831_zpse7fdf141.jpg.html)

Pretty nasty homemade seat pad, with a rack badly welded to the rear grab bar.

Both hand controls are broken, as well as it not having any front brakes, but at least it has a drink holder!
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t73/dalbey58/Honda%20atc/20130525_142212_zps231df116.jpg (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/dalbey58/media/Honda%20atc/20130525_142212_zps231df116.jpg.html)

Homemade hitch..

And finally, after a few hours of cleanup, scraping the 28 years worth of crud off the motor, and pulling all the goofy crap off of it, here is the after pics.

Just throw on a new seat cover and your good as new. And is that a hondaline drink holder? Rare.

All joking aside, it actually cleaned up pretty good.

Yep, that's what I was thinking also! The seller said that it ran fine on the phone, but I figured even if it didn't, I could part it out and make my money back. I have already changed the oil (it was black as hell), rear diff oil (pretty clean), plug, and air filter, and then took it for a ride up and down the street a couple of times.
For being so ugly, like I said, it runs great.
My plans are to fix it up for my daughter, she already loves riding my SX, so it will be cool for her to be able to ride with me. I plan on selling off the little trailer and using the funds to try and find some of the missing parts.

Sweet deal! Heck around me that trailer is worth $150 alone, so its like you bought a running rider for $30... That drink holder looks like one of those water bottle holders for bikes, not a bad idea though, i have been thinking of putting one on my ES, but not up on the bars, i was going to put it on the rack so i can carry along a water bottle within easy reach.

$180 though overall, you stole that thing!! I can't find a running basket case for less than $300 most of the times.

A little update. Ive been working on the new sx, a bunch lately. Here is where im at now. I have been cleaning, installing, and replacing a ton of worn out, and missing parts. I just rebuilt the front forks yesterday, with new seals, boots, etc. Here is a quick pick of the trike before installing the rebuilt forks. One fork was completley empty, and the only thing that come out of the other one was muddy water.

Very nice for sure.

I've wanted SX racks for quite some time now but I go so slooow that
I don't even need a waterbottle holder.

Great find.

So, just a little update. Back on are the front forks( fully rebuilt w/ new boots), and I have also installed new bars and most of the controls, (im still looking for a right perch and handle) as well as getting all the wiring unboogered up, installing the dash etc. Its a pretty cool to see the reverse light, and the nuetral like come on, as well as hearing that electric start wanting to fire up, considering who knows how long its been since the trjke had hat stuff on it opperational.
Ill post up som updated pics soon.

So, a little progress update:

The forks are done, new bars, all restored controls, with new levers, and all new cables. Wiring has all been fixed (everything works now), and dash is hooked up with a new ignition switch. I have also just put on my new front wheel and tire. Its actually getting down to basically plastics, and rear wheels and tires. The rear wheels and tires, I am going to try and order in the next few days. I do have a front fender en route, but still need the mudflaps. Anyway, here are a few updated pics..

Wow, very nice! I was thinking I wouldn't have bought it when I saw the first pic....until I saw what you paid! Mine wasn't much better and I paid 4x that much several years ago. Being a Missouri trike, mine also had the cupholder option installed.

Did you do the tank yourself? I'd like to get mine done, but I'm not a painter. Someone here does tanks, but I can't remember who it is.

Hey thanks! Its been a fun little project for me.
As far as the tank, its the same tank that came on it. I just polished it out, and added new decals, and a new red Clark cap. It turned out pretty good, so im gunna run it.

I still need a few things on my SX before I can declare the build done, but I stole the rear wheels and tires off my other SX so I could take a shake down spin on her up and down the street last week. After a couple of passes, I realized that the shifter would not return, when I downshifted from 3rd to 2nd.
I had read some posts about the shifter return pin either backing out, or backing out and breaking off.
I figured that that must be my problem, so I ordered up the new pin and case gasket.

. http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t73/dalbey58/Honda%20atc/20131012_130640_zpsfb48d135.jpg (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/dalbey58/media/Honda%20atc/20131012_130640_zpsfb48d135.jpg.html)

Here is what I found..

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t73/dalbey58/Honda%20atc/20131012_151723_zps6a44e6e9.jpg (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/dalbey58/media/Honda%20atc/20131012_151723_zps6a44e6e9.jpg.html)

Luckily, I was able to get the broken piece out of the case, and replace it with the new one.
After getting everything put back together, I took her for another spin, and she shifts like new.
I have no idea how long it may have been broken, but am sure glad no other damage was done.

Now, I did cheat and steal the rear fenders off my other SX for the pics, because I have been looking for some nice rear OE fenders, for months, but can't seem to find any. I thought about posting this up as a wtb add, but figured ah screw it, that I would just post it on here.
Right now have two decent rear mud flaps that I am going to use, but the holes are kinda messed up, and I was hoping to be able to run the OE mounting hardware. But, I also have an NOS right side, and I am looking for a ( I know they are as rare as hens teeth) NOS left side to complete the set. If I can locate and NOS left side, I will sell off the other set I have. So, if anybody has any leads that would be great. :D

So, I posted an add in the classifieds for a headlight guard, and was lucky enough to get a pm about one for sale. When it arrived, I decided to media blast it and paint it red, to sorta match my all red theme. I have a question though, and was hoping somebody out there could answer it for me. Did these guards when purchased back in the day as an accessory come with the center grille, or did you have to purchase it separately? My guard has the spots where the grille could, or would have been mounted.

I also went with Doug's recommendation for my front tire/wheel set-up. I went with Bear Claws on all three corners... although I love 'em, I will admit that they are a little on the heavy side. What tire is that that you are running up front? Is it a 23x7-10?

I thought that's what it was - just wanted to confirm. Are you pleased with it, or have you ridden with it much yet?

I'm still debating with what tire to go with out front on my SX with Mud Lites in the rear. Anyone ever tried running a Mud Lite up front on a trike? It would be lighter than a Bear Claw, and still look pretty aggressive.

Yeah, I like that it's light weight, and it handles real well.
I went with the Duro, because I wanted the tire to still have a somewhat stock appearance, and didn't want to be to aggressive.

So a couple of weeks ago I went out riding, and soon realized that my clutch had started to slip. So, I ordered a clutch kit, and this morning started in on the job. As I started to torque down the clutch basket I heard a pop, and looked down to see that center clutch had cracked. Total bummer, but I was able to buy one off of ebay, and hopefully will be able to finish up this next week. I guess that after almost 30 years the pot metal tends to get weak.

How many clutch plates did you install? The count is 5 of the fiber plates and 4 of the steel plates. Some kits come with more as they are the same plates the 350X uses so the kits are configured for the X. Having too many plates can cause the hub to crack or break...... Ask me how I know this...... A little off-topic here... but where did you the decal for the gas tank? Is it a factory Honda decal or a reproduction?

Ebay, dirt cheap. I doubt that they are OE, but the color is good, etc.

Anyway, here are a few updated pics..

what did you use to bring the gas tank back and how did you go about it? I have a white Clarke tank on my trike and would love to spruce it up and make it nice like yours so please lend me any tips you can

Rubbing compound and a buffer, followed up with polish and a buffer. Although, im not to sure if you will have great success, if your tank has yellowed, as the white Clarke tanks tend to do.
Also, my tank was obviously empty, and had been sitting out in the open for days without a cap, or petcock on it before I started to buff it. The combo of the buffer, compound, and the plastic tank make for a ton of static electricity, so be careful. :)

No yellowing on my tank what so ever just light scratches and marks from the triple tree rubbing it. Just want to make it as smooth and cleAn as possible before putting decals on it. Never worked with a plastic tank so im lost

Hey Dicky, decals on plastic tanks don't stay on. They are going to bubble right off. The fuel vapors leech through the plastic.

I thought the same thing but I have seen people put them on with no issues the tank had stickers on it when I got it so I didnt know if it was worth a shot or not or if I should just leave it bare.

You can try but more than likely they will bubble off.

Jim is right, the decals will bubble, but I've been pretty lucky with mine. I poked holes in mine with a needle to help with the bubbling, have been on since last year, and are still holding tough. I just rub my finger on the bubble spots that pop up every so often, and it's all good.

Well, the new clutch is in, as is a heli coil for stripped out drain plug. Damn, I hate when that happens.
Anyway, I was able to go out for a ride today and man, the new clutch rocks, and she ran great!
While stopping for a quick break, I snapped a quick pic. Man these trikes are a lot of fun!:lock:

It's been a good week, thanks to forum member unclecracker, I no longer have to steal my plastics off of my other SX. He sold me a super nice set of complete rear plastics to finally finish off my project SX. I did some digging this week and was able to find two NOS headlight guard grilles, for dirt cheap, so now I can add one to my guard.
It's been an awesome project, and I can't wait for my daughter and I to be able to get some riding time in.

Thanks to everyone who helped along the way, with the supply of knowledge and parts.

My two Sx's, my finished project on the right.

Sweet! I've been wanting to find a SX for a good while now. Saw one on CL last night that was posted a couple weeks ago for 150. I'm sure it's gone by now. Was only the frame, triples, one fork, and the engine. Would need loads of work. Anyway, back to your bike; I've always preferred the 87 colors, but for some reason, I really dig your red twins!

They are pretty much the same profile, but with the crossbar.
I got them off of ebay, Moose racing ATV low profile bars. Sorry, I dont remember the exact P#.
