What size main jet are you running with your tri-z with a clamp on filter right off the carb? stock is 340, or at least that is what is in mine now, i just want a base on what to order as i am placing a order from Denniskirk and dont want to wast all the money on the wrong jets.

For your 85 Z, stock main is 470.

i thought that there were two different ones, one for a 85 and one for a 86? 340 seems way to small then

yeah there are two different types of carbs i think both are 32mm but different i guess

86 engine was different somehow and it required a smaller Jet. A good base would be to go up 3 jet sizes is what I personally would do, and check it real good and make sure it's not running lean. Better to be too rich than lean :)

well mine must have been changed out or something as it is an 85. why were they different carbs anyway? Thanks

ive got a stock 85 w/32mm. factory call's for 460,mine wont run right wide open with anything larger than a 250 main, anything anything else fouls plugs when wide open

well mine ran just fine with the 340 in it, exept it had no bottom end, but that could of been that it needed a top end rebuild.

I'll be posting pics soon of my clamp on filter, for the guys who have been asking, as for mainjet I am running a 470 in mine, havent had a chance to test it out though, when I bought the bike it had a 200 main in it, but it ran ok, probably didnt blow up because it had very little compression.

i will be ordering one soon, how long is the one you have? the one i am ordering is only 2 1/2 inches with an offset flange. hoping i can still keep the coolant res. on yet, dont have to but i want to try at least. As long as enough air gets in yet. also i hope 5 1/2 inches round isnt too big...

2 1/2 inches, you will have no problem at all, I think mine is about 5 or 6 inces, and just barelu rests on the tank.

should the filter clear the frame as it is 5 1/2 inches round?

wow 5 1/2 inshes around man that is big i hope it works for you if it does it will be a tight fit

I'm not sure about the roundness, but the worst thing would have to do, is go to an auto parts store and get an angled piece of intake tubing, to angle it up a little bit. You are probably going to have to relocate the overflow tank though.

well it is offset, i didnt order it yet so i can order the longer skinny one if i have to

I have an idea, if it wont work when you buy it, buy some tubing, that when added to the angled filter, will make the filter sit at a 90 degree angle, so it is up above the frame and overflow tank, right underneath the seat, ___
l__l ----- airfilter
intake boot_ll overflow tank
get it?

yeah, i know what you mean, but sounds like too much work, lol. only thing is angling it up is it going to hit the carb? i think ill just get the longer one, its cheaper anyway. :-D

Well, my scematic got messed up, but it wont hit the carb if the tubing comes out away from the carb far enough, then angles up, but I would probably just buy a foam filter that is short and skinny, and has an angled flange, they are easier to work with.

well, im just going to get the longer one. however its not foam, its the K&N filter that is paper or whatever so it cant be "worked" around

Be sure to get an outerwears if you ride in dusty or wet conditions.

well i didnt rear all the responses to your post but here is what i run on my 85 Z

i have a stock carb with a 560 jet. i run a K&N filter off the back of the carb. i have no airbox anymore. because i have the gas tank there now. i also run boyseen reeds with a reed spacer. i have a LRD top end pipe. so i run the higher jet. i still have a 580 jet for the bike but it seemed to run correct with the 560. hope this helps.

560, seems big. Ill just have to try some but i dont want to run it too lean as when i first get it back together i have to break it in because its going to be a new top end. Ill have DG complete exhaust, boyseen power reeds, bored 1.25 over. the only thing im changing is the filter, and it ran fine with the 340 jet in it, dont know how as its supposed to have a 460 in it. Could it be that it is an 86 carb? I really just need a base to start from. how are the 86 differ from the 85 carb wise?

i dont know anything about the 86 bike but you can cheap partsfish and see if the jets are different
