i was wondering if you need the tripples from an 86 tri z to install 86 forks onto an 85 tri z 250.
I think so. I remember reading somewhere saying the 86 forks were larger in diameter.

Yes you need the 86 triple clamps for the 86 forks. They are larger diameter and I think the traval is increase a little less than an inch. I got 86 forks on my 85.

85 tri forks are 35mm 86 tri forks are 39 mm so you need clamps to upgrade,,,,,,,

I don't know the difference in performance. But I do know I have a set of triple trees. I think they are the 86 model also.

Denn has ridden both and says the 86 forks are alot better. I don't have any experience with the 85 so I can't say.
My 86 forks work pretty damn good certainly as good or better than my 1999 YZ400F.
I would say its worth the upgrade.

Before you spend all the money to get the 86 triple tree and forks try adding pre-load spacers or progressive springs to the 85 forks. When my 85 Z was stock the forks were really soft, I put 1.5 inch pvc pre load spacers in the forks and couldn't believe the difference. Did the same thing to my 86 350x and was again impressed with the $1.00 up grade.
