Also a little surprised how much faster the ATC ran that day against the others.. I always thought the Kawi was a bit faster than the rest.....

Would make sense on the gate start as the square is a lot heavier in the front to keep the front down for a holeshot......but 240 ft is just about where my R and the Tri z begin to gobble up the quad's....:lock::naughty:...ya buddy!! Cool article.....:beer

Hello myles
Below are a few excerpts from another comparison of the 86 tri-z, 250r and t3 by 3 and 4 wheel action. The link to the complete article is listed at the bottom of the post. Jus goes to show how different people can come up with different results.
“MOTOR MOTION
The undisputed king of horsepower; the Kawasaki Tecate, held its crown for '86 and benefited from the numerous engine improvements that were made. We noticed both a significant boost in the midrange over last year's model and in Kawie's always-explosive top end.”
That was my findings compared to the 250r never rode a tri z.

“All agreed that the Yamaha had the mellowest motor of the three,”
xxxxx
“If the Kawasaki got a good launch in the drags; it was 'bye-bye" to the Honda and Yamaha. More often than not, though, the Honda shot out of the hole first, making it very hard for the Tecate to catch up In the higher gears.”
This was close to my findings also and is subject to riders and traxck conditions. During my testing at Kawi the T3 beat the Honda 9 times out of 10 in a timed distance on the asphalt at Windy Point in Palm Springs which was around 60 yards long. Other comparison tests were also conducted on dirt and sand with close to the same results but they were close.

CORNERING CONCERNS
“The Tecate, true to its pure race form, turned precisely and, using proper throttle and brake techniques, could be put into a picture-perfect slide. The Kawasaki liked to either slide or go straight, nothing in between, exactly the type of handling a skilled racer might want.”
I agree with that but I did like the way the Honda turned also but it did feel noticeably different.
xxxxx
“Though there's nothing significantly wrong with the Tecate (as you will soon find out), we felt the other two bikes were better choices for the average recreational/trail rider.”
I agree with that, Kawi’s focus was to build the highest performance most race ready 3 wheeler we could with only a little [very little] concern for the more experienced recreational rider and 0 for the novice. In the motorcycle line everyone makes enduros for less experienced riders. One size can’t fit all!

Finally, the Tri-Z brings up the rear in the race awards.

Ya totally agreed, but this article is 1985, and yours is 1986. I'm not sure of the differences between the model years, but maybe a few improvements for the 86 model's make the difference between them.:beer
