View Full Version : Digging to the Tecate

Hoping to start digging into my new '85 Tecate tonight. It's leaking oil from the kicker shaft seal, so I'm thinking I need to pull the side cover and replace that. Got a manual (thanks Oscarmeyer). Can anyone tell me...I'm trying to figure out if I can get away with just a side cover gasket, or will I need to pull the water pump too? It looks like it might be able to stay in place on the cover and just pull it off together.

x2 - I replaced the clutch without pulling the pump off the side cover.

I did take some maneuvering to get the cover off but had nothing to do with the pump. Just not a lot of room with the engien in the frame.

Or, I need to do it more...

Congrats on the new Tecate!

Thanks. I'm warming up to it. I didn't get time to take it apart last night. Honestly, I just wanted to ride it! So I checked the antifreeze, oil and replaced the missing motor mount bolts  and took it for a spin. I've confirmed that it's definitely the kicker shaft seal, so that should be easy. I also noticed in the parts list that you can still get the oil level window. That's cool, because I can't see through this one.

Coolant leak looks like the radiator rather than just a hose, so that's a bummer. Do people still repair those?

Also, I'm discovering what a 2-stroke newbie I am. I'm used to this nice, friendly 4-stroke linear increase of power, but on this thing, there's about 5 degrees of throttle rotation between putting along and lying on your back looking at the clouds! Is that normal?

Oh, and one last question...I don't have a favorite dealer for Kawasaki parts, I was looking at Powersports Warehosue. Anyone have experience with these guys? They offer free shipping. Otherwise I'll go back to Bike Bandit.

Update: They offer free shipping on orders over $299.

Hello

If there's something you can't find try cmsnl.com. NOS OEM parts for sale with OEM fiches to view for parts and reference.

For OEM manual go to oscar mayer manuals in te search engine, they are free but take up to 15 minutes to load.

Hope this info helps.

i used to use the heck out of bikebandit but partscycle from what I have seen/heard is a little cheaper. and the throttle response is typical for tecates lol, lightswitch power band!

i dont know what the tecate guys do, but depending on where the radiator is busted you may be able to have aa local radiator shop repair it for a reasonable price. may still be cheaper to find a used one or explore other avenues. Glad to hear you are enjoying your new bike, nothing beats learning a new machine!

edited because i got the name wrong. its cheapcycleparts.com . I bought around 1000$ worth of stuff off bikebandit in 2004 when i was restoring my 85 250sx. but from what I know cheapcycle parts is a little cheaper

getting the bike for $500 was a steal. Most I've seen for that price haven't run in 15 yrs and have been sitting outside for 20. Nice bike. Keep us updated on the progress!

If your just replacing the shift shaft seal I believe it is pressed in from the outside, that is how mine is.

Dude, i too had forgotten the power of a 2 stroke. I love the reference "light switch powerband" that is what it seems like! I rode my friends 1998 kx250 and that one is not as "on and off" like the Tecate!

I also think you got a great deal for $500! Mine was $1500, i rode it for a day and already have to replace electrical parts!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I ended up ordering from powersportswarehouse.com, who I've never used before, but their prices were cheaper than Bikebandit. Shipping was high though, $22 for parts that should be only about 1 pound total. I had forgotten about cheapcycleparts.com, and didn't see that suggestion until now.

The more I hear from you guys, the more I realize what a deal I got. This is my 7th running trike, but my first real sport machine, making a very cool addition to the collection.

The radiator is more than likely cracked around the lower mount. It can easily be welded, don't bother trying jb weld it wont work and will cause more work for the person welding it. For kawi parts I use riderschoiceracing.com Free shipping on oem kawasaki parts and the prices arent jacked up to cover shipping.

x 2 on the lower mount. Left side for some reason. Both of mine cracked the tank there. Local welding shop fixed both of them at different times. last one was $30.

LOL, Kinda if you haven’t ridden one before.

I don't have a favorite dealer for Kawasaki parts,

In addition to the other new original parts dealer I previously mentioned [which may not have tecate 3 wheel parts, you can get new original parts at the following two dealers whose links are pasted below. I don't know about pricing though.
