There may be minute differences, but for the most part I believe they are very similar. Good to see another VA guy on here. Do you have something to ride currently, or are you looking?

250r's seem to go 2 years and change drasticly. Like 81-82 and then there is 83-84 and then 85-86 and there is the ghost of one by it self 87(that who knows if it really exists.) But yeah they are pretty much the same other than the number on the frame.........peace

83 and 84 do have some subtle differences.
The rear shock on the 83 is laid down at a more radical angle.
So parts wise we are talking upper shock mount/rear motor mount, shock, swingarm, and linkage.
I seem to remember something about the original '84 piston having a teflon coated skirt? Like any of them have the original piston at this point.
That's all I can think of for now.
I guess I really should just get out the parts fiche.

Yeah I looked at the parts fische and that looks to be the only difference but the shock system would work on either one if swapped it all out.

.. the '84R motor has more horsepower than the '83R's. This is mostly due to a much higher compression piston (7.3:1 in the '84 vs 6.7:1 in the '83) and revised porting.

ooooooookkkk here are the main differences from a 83/84 R
83 has different lower shock linkage (top mount is exactly the same, and you can use either the 83/84 setup)
the 84 engine MAY be a little bit more powerful, although engine parts and engines will swap through years 81-84
