Ok I know this is a trike forum and I'm fixin to talk about a quad, but this is the same principle and people on this forum are much more knowledgable then any other forum I'm in. I have a 92 timberwolf 250 that I just picked up for free everything on this bike is good my friend got a new bike and gave me this one. When I got it the piston was seized in the cylinder. So I sprayed some JB80 in their and I broke it free within 3 or 4 hours. JB80 is an awesome product that all my Dads Cajun customers in Louisiana swear by. Now the thing is can you start a motor with penetrant in the cylinder? Or am I going to have to spray it with carb clean and let it tip over and let it pour out?

why not? it may interupt with the mix of air and fuel but wont hurt anything. just spray some carb cleaner in spark plug hole and drop a drop of oil in there after to make sure it doesn't seize again without any oil on the rings.

Are saying the penetrant will be fine in their or does it need to come out? Kinda confused on what you said.

Either way is fine. Penetrating oil might foul spark plug but that's About it.

I guess the most important question here is: Do you know WHY it was seized?

Have you drained the crankcase oil to see what, if anything, comes out?

You could do a compression check first to see if it has the compression needed to fire, or you could just try starting it and if it doesn't start, then check the compression. I've done it both ways.

I wouldn't worry about starting it with penetrating oil in it, however, I would not spray carb cleaner into the cylinder. The carb cleaner will wash the lubricant from the penetrating oil off of the cylinder walls. Since it was seized up, a little lube on the upper cylinder walls when you first start it could be a benefit, and it's definitely not going to hurt anything. Pull or kick it over a few times to get a coating of lube on the upper cylinder walls then give it some fuel and see if it will fire.

I have a spray bottle of 40:1 gas/oil mix and I spray some of that thru the carb to try starting machines like this, or even if they've been sitting for an extended amount of time. It gives the engine the fuel it needs to see if it will fire, along with a little upper cylinder lube.

Make sure you update the thread with what your results are.

I have had trikes that were seized just from sitting, the whole cylinder was rusty above the piston, the way i got them moving again was soak the cylinder with PB Blaster through the plug hole, drain and fill the oil, even overfilling it just a bit, take one of the caps off on the head and pouring some oil in to lubricate the cam and rockers, then after the PB Blaster does its job and it will turn over i toss in a plug and a couple squirts of fresh gas into the carb and get it to fire and run. If it runs i let it idle a while and see how much oil it burns off. Believe it or not i have had some in this condition continue to run without any oil use or smoking after the rings scrape the rust off the cylinder walls. Not saying they will be the best but i had one that ran two years after doing just this before a top end rebuild was needed when it started smoking.

Just can't kill a Honda.... LOL

Penetrating oil works good for penetrating, not lubricating. It wouldn't hurt to get a little engine oil on the cylinder and rings to help them seal up and make some compression. Most likely it couldn't hurt anything worse than they already are if you just tried to fire it up. The penetrating oil will burn out if it starts and you build up some heat. Good luck.

Clean your carb and tank and start her. You'll be fine :)

I agree with Bill, don't over think it..

But when it starts keep the revs down..the penetrating oil not being a great lubricant and the rust lip in the cylinder may just burn out what bit of rings may be left if you rev the crap out of it.

Then sell it and buy a trike!!!

Ok we'll I have cleaned the tank out good and I did some what of cleaning on the carb the best I could without air and carb clean ( I'm not where I can get to my shop at the moment ) but I will clean it thoroughly when I get home. The piston was just seized from sitting a while. I'm going to have to check compression. I'm getting a nice blue spark but it looks almost small I don't know that could be how it's supposed to be. I've got new ngk plug in it. And there was a little water in crankcase but not much everything seems to shift fine and piston moves great now. I just can't get it to fire. I tried spraying a little gas in cylinder but that didn't work either. When I get home ill put a tad bit of oil in the cylinder and give the carb a thorough cleaning like it needs.

Well guys I cleaned the carb and put a new spark plug in and had a spark but nothing happened. So I went to the trusty service manual and troubleshooted the ignition system and soon found out what I had feared, that my stator coil was putting out a low spark. The ohms are reading like 120 to 240 instead of 428 to 523 like the manual says. And a new stator coil for this bad puppy is like $200+ so I'm beside myself, anybody know anyone with a 92-93 Yamaha timberwolf 250 stator coil i can buy?

ebay, get a used one. Or check to see if ricky stator has a coil for it.

Were it me and on a first test run/drive machine, I would source a cheap after market or Chinese knock off and try that first. If it cures the problem, run it until you can locate a good used or new pulse coil for it. No sense in spending $200 on a good coil if the rest of the machine ends up being a parts source project. Just my .02 cents

Good luck and send a pic or two when you have a chance.

Yea I agree Dave ima try to find one cheap and see if it fixes it.

Well the cheepest i can find is like $150. While I'm not a cheapo I don't want to spend that much on a coil that might not fix my problem. So here is another thing since the coil is a wet coil (submerged in oil) and I know there was water sitting in the bottom of the motor, if there is any rust on the coil do yall think it would be worth my time to try and sand the contact points on the coil and the magneto? I'm willing to spend the money I just want to know it will fix it before I drop a $200 part into a bike.
