i was browsing Craigslist and see a guy is trading and i offered up my 200x, i'm just wondering if the tri-z is reliable and worth the trade? I guess the z need's carb work as gas runs out the overflow

Trade and clean the carb on the Z

I would get a z over a 200x. The is bigger more power faster and is far easier to work on. Down fall parts are harder to find for it.

Trade it for sure

I you like putting around in the woods, creeks etc and riding all over VS racing around you may want to keep that 200. It you just want to rip it up get the Z.

BiGDawG
03-23-2013, 01:08 AM
Well I do love the x but it's just 2 small for me, I plan on getting a 4x4 quad to abuse and if I trade for the z it will be what I rip up the sand dunes with and annoy the neibors with as it's legal for us to ride the back roads

with the extended swingarm, that really sweetens the deal, long as its decent

BiGDawG
03-23-2013, 04:40 AM
Yea he said only thing wrong is the carb gas just runs out the overflow and no front breaks at all and the plastics are sanded so if I do end up tradeing I'll have my buddy professionally paint them this summer

If you get it post pics I would like to see that swingarm.

I love them both. 200X is nice and quiet. The Z is a much bigger animal and twice the power. Most likely float stuck from float pin. If you trade for it and need a carb let me know have a few laying around.

Stuck float, floats not properly adjusted or trash between the needle and seat. Either way do it.

Make sure you look over this bike well. It was listed not too long ago except now the the paint has been sanded off the fenders, it was painted black with blue flames which you can still see on the tank. It could be the same person that had it listed originally but I would guess the person selling it now just bought it. Maybe he does just want something tamer for his son but it could also be that there is more wrong than what he is saying.

But that is assuming you are talking about this tri-z http://saginaw.craigslist.org/bar/3689785203.html

Yea that's the 1 it's runs great fast but I noticed after I got home and riped it down the road a few times before work when I parked it the rad fluid was running out the overflow

Guess I can't upload pics from my iPod

Now that I'm thinking about it he did say he hasn't had it long, and recognized my x from YouTube lol

I can't figure out how to get the links from my iPod I'll add pics when I get home from work

Overheating?

BiGDawG
03-24-2013, 12:28 AM
Hmm how could it be overheating it was like 40 out. He said something about I need to look up and make sure the rad hoses are on righ

90guy
03-24-2013, 12:36 AM
It could be over heating if that thermostat is stuck shut or if that water pump isnt pumping fluid. Which could be do to the hoses hooked up wrong.

volfan537240
03-24-2013, 12:37 AM
Running lean, water pump/thermostat failure, blown head gasket etc could cause overheating. Outside temps would have nothing to do with that.

BiGDawG
03-24-2013, 02:21 AM
Anyway to tell if there hooked up backwards, and how can I check the pump / thermostat.. Seems like if it was a blown head it would be smoking bad

buddy decided to pull the sign off the back of my truck and jump in the pic lol i really need a larger drop hitch lol

gotta work tomorrow night then i have monday and tuesday off i need to get some gas and oil then i'll try to get a video of it running

Hoses should go from the head to the top of the Rad, water pump cover to bottom of the Rad. Have you looked at jetting? I'd do a wide open plug check at the very least to make sure its not running lean.

Did someone just overfill the overflow bottle? Pop your rad cap off and run it check for circulation, get some better pics of that swingarm cleaned up...looks very similar to mine.

Obviously, keep it simple first, but I just put a head gasket on because mine because it was pushing fluid out the overflow tubes. It wasn't smoking other than the normal 2 stroke smoke , and even pushed 170PSI on a compression test, but that is the only thing I did and it fixed it.

They fit larger guys well.

Be aware of the kickstarter case cracking (jet it right for a 1 kick start), Also waterpump and fuel pumps can all be an issue.

They are fast!

BiGDawG
03-24-2013, 05:32 PM
yea it starts first kick, i'll check the hoses and flow tomorrow or tuesday them are my day's off, gotta work tonight and i'll get better pic's with my camera instead of my phone lol

also it has the baja light's on it but he said they have never been hooked up, need to look into hooking them up and finding a grab bar / taillight also could use new foot pegs sitting on the bike it would be the right foot is bent down

tri-Z ripper
03-24-2013, 06:19 PM
right side foot peg always leans because of kick starter. I put a clean little bead of weld under the foot peg stop to raise it up even. Also you can look at raffas foot peg replacements in 3ww store.

how do i see if its running lean? and how hard is it to replace the head gasket..

oile
03-26-2013, 02:04 AM
I'd check the water pump every Tri z that I have bought has had a bad pump.

BiGDawG

I though the fluid in the rad moving meant the pump was working?

Its does.

Provided you have adequate coolant and the radiator is full, and it is flowing, and you know that it is coolant, not just water, put the cap on, start it up, and give it a few full revs while watching the overflow. Does it spit with each shot of the throttle? Keep watching it as it warms up. It should get worse as it warms, but will spit coolant before it even reached full opertaing temp. If its does this, your head gasket is leaking, whcih is a common problem on these things due to head warpage and past overtightening. When head and cylinder surfaces are less than a perfect match, Cometic (Wiseco) head gaskets seal far better than metal ones, and a nice film of Copper Coat on it helps with the seal and the heat transfer.

If you aren't getting a coolant spit while driveway testing, rinse the coolant off, and wait until you can recreate the problem and see what is going on, and verify a relationship between coolant spitting and RPMs. The worst thing you can do is tear it apart and start swapping parts without first diagnosing the cause. Keep in mind, they do sometimes occasionally emit some coolant when being pushed, when everything is fine. Thats whay that bottle is on the end of the hose to begin with.

Doing some plug checks is always good with a new machine, but even if you run lean enough to melt the piston, it won't likely cause any external signs of overheating or blowing coolant.

I don't know much about tri-z's but I do know a bit about banshees ans they will puke coolant out of the overflow when running too lean and they both use similar setups.

Could also be the radiator cap.

I'd check the water pump every Tri z that I have bought has had a bad pump.
#1 reason a Z gets parked in the barn corner...Most people being cheap in nature never replaced the impeller or the seals/gaskets involved in the waterpump area of the motor. When most original owners blew the motor the frist time around...they bore it, slap a piston, rings, and gasket on the top not knowing the faults of the Z system. They bring it home runs great for about 2hrs and then Bam! the motor smokes and the topend is junk. When you do your rebuild pin the impeller....search for the thread it's in 3WW. This is a fixable problem with soild results you just need to correct a $2.00 part to save a $200+ bore. Any Z you buy always drain the crank case...its a quart of oil(no big deal) if it's not clean, milky or grey in any way...pump seal failure and if the topend isn't blown yet it will be soon.

alright i'll go give that a try here in a few i want to extend the kill switch to a more reachable area while on it. and i'll check the oil with my next check what type of oil dose it take? would it be the same as the x?

volfan537240
03-26-2013, 05:52 PM
Find out which kind of oil is in it now. Swapping to a different type could cause the clutch to slip.

I run the best but that's me. Amsoil ATF highest thermal breakdown compared to oil and super light but high viscosity. Used to run Spectro platinum clutch saver good but a buddy who is a race mechanic turned me onto the ATF it looks like blood when it leaks to so you know what it is.

work then sleep and repeat lol, i gotta get up early and fax my pay roll in i'll get some pics then.

while i'm thinking about it anyone know what wire is positive for the headlights? there's a black and a black with a white line, i have no stock kill / headlight switch, kill switch is mounted else where on the bike and i plan on hooking the baja lights to a toggle

MTS
03-29-2013, 09:57 AM
The black is your light ground and black/white is your ignitionswitch, your light is yellow and green if i remember right yellow is high beam green low, ill double check mine today and let you know.

BiGDawG
03-29-2013, 03:09 PM
ok yea my ignition is missing lol replace by a toggle, uh i'll have to look and see if i can find any green or yellow wire's, i think i'm gonna take the bike to a local 2 stroke guy and have him check it out i took a ride around the 20 acres today barley hit 3rd gear cause its 2 wet and when i went to part it i noticed i was leaving a trail of gas lol and when i shut it down a tiny bit of coolant leaked out, my camera batteries died before i could get a video so the 1 i'm posting sounds like garbage gotta love cheap phone cameras lol

audio sucks make sure your sound is low lol video was when i first started it up haven't ran it since i brought it home, fired up second kick
