So here is a pic of hte stator from my 1986 kx500

THe way I undersand it one sice it so trigger the CDI and the other is to Charge the coil?? Is this even true

Okay now the complicated part. Can I move (will cut grind rewind if necessary) the charging coil to ontop of the ignition coil so I can build a custom lighting coil for hte other side tha will now be avaiable

May or may not help Dan, but have you looked into a cross reference between the kx500 stator and that of another kwaki bike OR wheeler? After doing a little digging, I've found a couple options for the honda atc. May be similar for the kawasaki line up. Otherwise, I see no reason that a lighting coil couldn't be added but the tolerance is going to be quite small for getting things together and working correctly. Also, you'll need a different R/R to handle the additional amps of the lighting circuit.

Check a few sites like Ricks Stators and bike bandit for what machine uses what stator. I'll bet you find that there is already one out there that will slide right in. If so, then do a little shopping around for the best price option. Hope this helps. :beer

If you want lights the easiest way is to source a complete 1990-on ignition. The stator plate has factory mounting locations for a lighting coil that will bolt right on.

I want the lights and the 86 stator!!!!! THe rotor for the 86 is tiny and1/2 the wight of the later years. Less rotating mass plus a diffrent program in the 1986 CDI is suppose to make it kick like a mule on roids. I appreciate the answers but I'm not just looking for lights. If that was All I could do a battery and LED's. I want to put a lighting coil on an 86 stator and want to know if it's doable

I've never seen it done with the early style flywheel and I've played with alot of them. All Kawi lighting coils I've seen are too large to fit behind it. A small battery and some LED's may be the best of both worlds for your setup.

Anything is doable. Skill sets are to be determined...

Lets start with me saying that I know NOTHING about your system, but I do know that on my KTM enduro bike (which has lights, but no battery) the stator is easily 2 to 3 times larger and heavier that the non-light MX version stator. I also just did a bolt on for a guy that had a non-light sytem that uses a battery (electric start model) and the Trailtech stator we put on was HUGE compaired to the stocker. My point simply is that I don't think a small stator can crank out the wattage you'll need to power a light, but on the plus side the added weight of the Trailtech assembly did not seem to slow down the guys bike, so don't fret too much if you have to go with a bigger unit.
