View Full Version : 2nd Gen 250R shifter, what to do?

Been working on a friends 250R, and making an effort not to half trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro it.

The splines on the existing shift lever aren't very good. I'd just clamp it on tight, but I purchased a new shifter spindle. I don't want to damage a nice new part by rigging up an old one.
I haven't found too many 2nd gen shifters for sale.

Does anyone know of another model whose shift lever is interchangeable?
Anyone ever fabricate something?
Should I find a Honda shifter with good splines and weld it to the current lever?
Is there an aftermarket that I'm just missing?
Use a file and re-cut the splines?

Any advice or suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

I've actually cut the pinch space with a hacksaw.
They seem to tighten and bottom out before they reach their
ultimate pinch, if that makes sense.

Yeah, any motion between the shaft and shifter when they are 'tight' is never good.

I've cut the space wider and tightened on shifters before. I'm hesitant because because 1/4 of the splines are gone and there is a crack in the weld. I'll try to get pictures up.
I'm aiming to get a better one. Find some obscure aftermarket or interchangable is preferable.
If those options don't pan out, then finding something to donate good threads and weld it.
Lastely, find the smallest edge file I have and try to re-cut the threads.

I'm confused.

The splines on the shaft are good or bad?

The splines on the shifter are good or bad?

Replace whichever one is bad, or both. Am I missing something?

Here's a picture of the situation.
The splines by the gap where the shifter 'pinches' around the spindle are just about gone. Remaining splines aren't much better. I suspect that the gap has already been cut before. Towards the bottom of the picture you can see the side profile of a crack in the weld. It continues through 1/4 to 1/3 of the weld.

Honestly, I took the picture to validate taking an extended lunch break. HA!

Fabio. I'm not a very good writer. I put a near new good shift spindle into the engine. The shifter is NOT in good condition. I don't want to damage the good spindle by using a bad pedal.

I will most likely replace the pedal. I'm hoping some one knows of an aftermarket or a newer/ more common ATV that is interchangable.
Will most likely replace with another 250R shifter. Wasn't sure on the availablity of one, didn't see many on E-bay and they were in questionable condition.

Sorry for the confussion.

Nicker71 above says he has some gear shifters. I would contact him. Or...

PM was sent to Nicker.
I don't have $75 and I'm inquiring about the other on E-bay. The mounting and splines look to be worn.
I'm not trying to be a pain. Just wanting to see every option before making a choice. It's a friends machine I'm hesitant to make a choice.
I do like the feed back and help.

This one's only $40. Is this the one that looked messed up to you? I didn't notice anything wrong with it.

The splines near the gap look like they may be worn. Waiting for a reply back from the seller.

Nicker: PM sent. I can ball the dollar bills and toss them to you, or fold into air planes and fly'em. Which ever payment meathod is preferable.
