Hey everyone! I have been searching and reading old threads on this forum for the last few days trying to get ideas on what to do to my 85 250r but still can't make up my mind, so here I am wanting to get your opinions. I bought this trike from it's original owner, so I was fortunate enough to get all of it's previous history. It's still on the original bore and stock internals but the compression is still within factory specs, so all is well there. It has an FMF Fatty head pipe and Richter Privateer muffler, the air box kid is still on but it has a K&N surfeited that will be replaced with a UNI soon. The jetting is spot on thankfully but the reeds are stock and will be replaced with V-Force ones and the rear sprocket miss been swapped for a 45 tooth with the countershaft sprocket being stock. Overall the trike runs flawless but I always want more and this is part of my question. What would you do? I don't like the Richter muffler cause it's obnoxiously loud but the FMF Fatty head pipe seems to fit my riding style perfectly, it seems to lack a little off the bottom but hits nicely in the mid range and carries the power out to redline fairly well. Do you think adding the reeds and removing the airbox kid along with a rejet will provide a decent boost in power? How about ported factory bore or mildly bored over jugs? I know port work makes a huge difference but can I buy another jug from a company without having to remove mine and send it off to someone? My next question is the gas tank, I have white fenders and tank shrouds but think a white tank might make the while package look better but does anyone sell them? Front fork covers, are they really necessary? Mine are so brittle that any flex just breaks them. I found this out after riding a wheelie the other day. I know I have asked a lot of questions but this is my last one! Can anyone explain why my front tire is not straight with the forks? When riding straight you have to keep to handlebars turned slightly, its noticeable when looking at the front also. I have taken everything off and can't find anything wrong! The axle isn't bent, forks are straight, the triple clamps are straight, rim is not bent, hub is fine and bearings too but something is not right! Thanks for your help guys!

the handle bars are more than likely bent. I read it a couple times but what are you saying about the jug? you want to get another?

Well, I would rather get another stock bore sized jug that has been ported and keep the current one for an extra. I might be better off buying a stock jug and having it ported though. I just want enough power to run with most of the newer 450+cc quads, which shouldn't take much effort. What do these 250r's with my mods usually make for power, around 35ish at the wheels? I guess in the low 40Reno range is about where I need to be since most of those quads I mentioned have aftermarket parts by now. I'm not trying to build a dragster, just something competitive on the trails.

Stock 250r has roughly 38 HP.

That rear sprocket seems really big, 6 teeth over stock, which would take a serious bite off the top speed of your machine (unless your running monster tires). Unless your doing some really really slow woods trails or rocks I'd be tempted to get that gearing back to stock and then do the power adders from there.

That is the plan and you aren't lying about the gearing being rediculously low! I over rev first gear a lot, cause of it being pretty useless. The previous owner only road it in the dunes and I suspect that is why it's so low. I was gonna take it to the dunes also but after cleaning on it I have changed my mind. I will be digging sand out of parts for the next ten years! Luckily it hasn't caused any damage. What silencer do you guys run and is the noise tolerable?

Unless you want a spare?,most reputable places have a decent turn around of week or so depending on where your sending it.
+1 on gearing, new reeds will wake it up. YES to fork covers, keeps your seals nice/lasts longer. Forks can be a pain unless you know what your doing.
Maybe one of your rear tires is a little low on pressure and pulls the steering a little?
Is there wear on one side of the tire more than the other?
There is an air nozzle at the top of your forks, make sure there is equal/very low pressure in them. I use a bike pump and digital gauge. NO COMPRESSED AIR!
That pipe might need some new packing.

All good advice. Sounds to me like your forks have turned in your triple trees. Loosen all 8 bolts and bump your tire straight . Good reeds will pull almost a gear higher. In other words,,if you're bogging uphill in 3rd now. You should be bogging uphill in 4th with good reeds. Even though your compression is in spec.. you're talking about a high performance 2 cycle engine that was built 27 1/2 years ago. I would freshen the rings and look REALLY close at the piston skirt for cracks.. A simple port clean up at that time will give you a little extra zip too. Sky's the limit on how fast you make that animal.

The turn around part is what I was mostly concerned with! I live in a decent sized city with a lot of ATV shops around, so I might can find someone here local that can do the porting, I just never thought about that until now. Thanks for the info and help, the guy below guessed my front tire problem correctly!

Thanks for the advice on my front tire! That was exactly my problem and looking back it makes more sense now cause my front brake was not dragging but the tire was definitely turned with everything else straight! I will definitely be getting the reeds next then! I installed a set in my old Blaster and it really woke that little engine up and figured they would really shine in this one. I forgot to mention but I plan to get new gaskets, piston and rings when I do get the jug ported. I am an endless access to race fuel and have contemplated bumping the compression a decent amount but I don't wanna get that radical.lol Thanks guys!
