Going to pick up this KLT in a month or so for $100. It's not running but I've never owned a Kawi anything before. Is there anything specific I should look for when I go to look at it? Are these good trikes? What are common problems with them & where can I get parts? 164651

There not a Honda thats for sure, they are fun to ride though, the manual clutch is great for playing but hard to get used to when using them for work or on really rough terrian ( plowed fields type stuff). I have a few and really like the 200's more than the 250's. The only thing you really always see wrong with them is no spark or weak spark. Bad cdi's I guess.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know they put manual clutches on these little trikes... That is definitely going to be different from riding the Honda big red, I actually prefer manual clutches, so that will be great.

There seems to be a lot of nos parts floating around for these too, and a majority of the parts interchange between the KLT's.

Does anyone know if these trikes are 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

Kinda looks like its temporarily "Melted-Water Cooled"

Thats a four stroke. I dont know as much about these as a Honda, but that pipe is a four stroke pipe. if it was a two stroke, that pipe would be like 2-3in diameter and twisty

Hello
I did development work on all the atv's at kawi from 83 until 88 and put many miles on the klt's. They are indestructible if properly maintained. You can ride them thru 1 1/2' deep water all day long and it will never miss a beat. Unfortunately that bike needs a full resto including probably the top end of the motor at least since it has been left out in the SNOW! That is a nice bike why would someone do that to it?

Just wondering what spark plug to use in the KLT 200. I just picked it up & it had no plug when I got it, not sure on the year. The parts stores say that all the 200s require an NKG B7ES or BR7ES. I picked up the Br7es because that's all they had but it is way too small (just pushes into the head. I can see the threads on the trike are in good shape & not stripped, just that the plug is too small). So what plug do I need? I can post pictures of the head if necessary. I searched for a different plug but kept getting the same number. I'm beginning to think someone swapped the motor........no Idea where the engine size is stamped on the motor either. Any help would be appreciated.

If there is no plug in it you probably have way more problems than you think. That snow is packed around that cylinder and I guarantee there is moisture down in that cylinder.

I'm not really concerned with moisture, it's not seized & only had the plug out for 3 months because the guys kids I bought it from were going to get a new one & misplaced the plug. It was running fine last fall.

Well, I have some good news. I've stripped the trike down to the frame to go through everything. It's almost completely back together again & it runs great!!! Will post pictures/videos soon. Pretty decent machine so far for under $150.

Electrical system on these bikes was/is very unreliable. Iv'e read that it's due to a low quality voltage regulator/rectifier which starts to fail and as a result damages the cdi box. I own 2 of them, a KLT 200 and a KLT 250. Both have been electrical nightmares. A replacement cdi is available from Rick's or Ricky's ( can't remember which ) for around $150 I think. That being said, when they do run, they are actually pretty powerful. Some of them had a very cool chain driven lockable differential. They also had a cool cantilever front suspension. Parts can be quite hard to find although I can give you a tip, the KZ200 road bike uses the same engine. Some models used a mechanical fuel pump that just never seems to quite work if you are under half a tank. I highly recommend switching to the electric pump, it alleviated a lot of starting problems for me. Other than that, they are a blast to ride. Due to the fuel tank being located over the rear axle they have a very low centre of gravity and are not very tippy at all.

Thanks. I picked up a parts trike so I'd have an extra wiring harness on hand. I know what you mean by "fuel pump problems", this thing is a real pain to get started but runs good after it finally does. How exactly do I lock/unlock the differential??

Do you have a taillight lens, air box cover, ignition switch with key or brake pedal shaft? Will the 160 parts you have fit on my 200? If you could contact me at kormos_93@hotmail.com I'd appreciate it. Thanks
