What causes a 2 stroke engine to backfire when trying to start? I recently rebuilt my motor, started it,ran it for 5 minutes, then shut it down. Now when I try to start it, it backfires. What will cause this?

make sure you retorqe the head and cylinder bolts down they will coem loose and cause it to back fire like it is right now try that. my friends blaster did the same exact thing.

thats what im wondering 86 200x....looks like theres a bar or something in there!!! Where at in Ohio do you live 86 200x??? like what city?
Guys, I believe the "bar" you are seeing is the linkage. That's the way older kawasaki UNI-Traks were designed. a push rod from the swingarm up to a rocker arm over the shock. which is behind his coolant reservoir and you can't see it.

Jeb is right, no "bar" on this suspension!
JMiller.... That light looks TUFF on that T3!! I LOVE IT! The trike looks great, its nice to see 86/87 tecates being restored and cared for. When I first came to the board their was only a few guys w/ them. You did a great job w/ the restoration.
Now for the back fire issue. What did you do to the motor? is the stator in the correct position? Did you time the KIPS valve correctly? Again w/ almost any running issue I look for wire conections. When the main plug from the stator has an issue (broken wire or dirt in it) it causes a T3 to do some funny stuff. Just a few ideas.
GOOD LUCK Keep us posted

I replaced the crank seals, crank bearings, just about every other seal and new piston and rings. It started right up after i put the motor in and ran until i shut it down. The mark on my case is aligned with the center mark on stator.I timed the KIPS how the manual said to. I just dont know why it would run fine and now not want to start? Thanks for the compliments on my trike, I ordred a set of factory replica stickers, new rear fender, and a DG silencer.

What causes it is you kick it once, it dumps gas in the cylinder, and doesnt fire. You kick again, its dumps more gas in there, and doenst fire, and so on. So after about five kicks, it finally decides to fire, and "kaboom", theres your backfire. When mines does it, its seriously close to a fouled plug thats not firing consistantly, but if I get it started, which usually happens the next kick, the plug burns clean, and Im fine.
Unless its happening an awful lot or while its running, its nothing to worry about. Its essentially an overcharge of fuel from an electrical system that did not fire every time. If its amything more serious than a plug, it will do it after it satrts, while running.

I pulled my flywheel and found the stator aligned to the center mark. My manual said to align it to the mark on the right.

Yeah the lights work great, could use a higher wattage stator though. 8)
Man I'm with Mik6, I love the headlight! May pick one up just to retire mine to the shelf since it's still in great shape!
Did shifting your stator to the factory recommended setting help any?

No, I moved the stator to the right notch and now it wont do anything. I have spark, fuel and good compression?????????

Well guys, I finally got my trike started and it runs great! I moved right notch on the stator to the mark on the crank case. I also put a NGK B8EG instead of B8ES. Viper did you pull your flywheel and check your stator position? Also, check your floats in your carb.
Congrats JMiller!!!!!!!!!!! I am glad to hear you got it running. I hope you get many great years riding it, and keeping it in its current condition.
NitroViper.. Bring it on up I am about 1.5 hours from you. I have complete spare ignitions here. I have a ton of experiance w/ T3s. I Know I can get it running.
