View Full Version : My 250ES mini build..documented.

So I picked up this 250ES last summer and immediately did tires/rims myself..a setup of my own style, but a perfect fit and compliment to the machine.

164030

Now the plastic tank thing is for me the most hidious thing ever also the clutches slip in high gear so I've been on the prowl for another BR for parts or project. I found one a couple weeks back for $300 but it's engine was also troubled..

Anyway I have another engine and some other parts coming Sunday from Cory (PS2fixer), also I found a local company to powder the tank for $60..

Before pics below:

164031164032164033

So I decided why not document all this since the transformation will be pretty significant..I won't be doing a complete frame up restore since I really like my mudder and it would break my heart to trash a MINT trike..I'll call this a refresh with new power plant!

Here is the starting point..engine out and waiting for Corey's, exhaust, engine guard off and painted. The plastic was put on by the PO and is all brand new Maier.

164034

Next week the engine goes in, the tank should be back from powdercoat..a new set of decals. Should look pretty decent..

Stay tuned.

Sure will, also I'll be able to install the side covers..they don't fit for shlt with the plastic tank!!

And I just ordered a set of Harlan decals today..

Well my project took a left turn today..Corey contacted me and told me the engine he was prepping for me had some unexpected issues. Nothing terminal, but more than I wanted to take on. I really wanted an 'untouched' motor. So I'm back in engine hunt mode!!

So , the NOS 250SX engine under my bench just became my 'A' plan for this mini-build.

I know at lot of guys think the black engine in the Big Red is just weird, but I like it and since I can't find a NOS 250ES engine, it seems my best bet.

Besides the black engine on the black rim trike format will look badass!!

I'll let you guys be the judges when I'm done.

Yeah I guess the answer was staring at me all along..I just didn't want to see it!

164181

When next you see it, it'll be framed!! In a way, kind of a shame to install it..but it will kick ass.

Plus then the parts I was gonna trade to Corey are enough to assemble an second 250ES beater trike from my parts machine..so it's not all bad. So maybe pics of two will be showing up soon!

Update: a gathering of parts at this point. A bit of parts porn for some of you guys!

1st tank went out for powdercoating..I got lucky on the parts machine I bought and got a solid tank. No rust inside, minimal outside..a few dimples (found after the powder) but no dents.

I'm sure you'll agree it was $60 well spent..just waiting on Decals from Harlan.

Before:
164379164380164381

After:
164382164383164384

Speedo cable arrived from Ebay..(CB350K 68-73) and was a perfect fit:

164394

NOS carb that came with the engine I'm installing. I misplaced the choke plunger assy, so I'm on the hunt for that:
164395

On a side note: I decided to assembly the remaining parts into a Frankentrike. It looks like crap but will make a running machine I could probably sell to cover some of my costs of the project.

164396

Well, that's it for now..I'll keep you posted.

dougspcs
03-08-2013, 12:35 PM
A bit more part porn from this weeks items I received..

1st: Harlan's decals..

164597

2nd: Cory covered the last 2 mechanical parts I needed. The driveshaft and a new OEM throttle cable..both in A1 condition.

164598

I'd love to put a few hours in this weekend and show some pics of the finished product. However we have plans to be in Toronto for the Comicon..my 13 year old daughter is a big fan. So it's off to the big city and no trike time, even though I have a big pile of parts and am super itchy to get started..

I hope she knows how much I love her!!

Anyway, next weekend will likely see some progress and I'll post some pics..

Just testing other members theories..some say a reversed tread on a non-drive steering wheel is the way to go..

So far I don't see a huge difference either way to be honest!

Well, we had a great weekend in Toronto..Comicon, up the CN tower for dinner. But by Sunday morning everyone was all funned out. So we headed home early.

As I soon as I got home I head out to the shop to get some work done..

164796

Motor installed and looking good..still alot to get hooked up before it runs, but it's officially no longer a NOS!!

164797

Not much will get done over the week because I have a busy work week..but next weekend should see alot done.

Yeah they are just standard ITP steel black 4/110 12"x7" 2+5 offset rims..bolt directly on and even correct offset for front.

Then pick your tires..I went with 26x8x12 Bear Claw on the front and a pair of 26x12x12 Mud Sharks on the rear..

Nice huh?

Well, today I got the wiring finished thanks to the kit I got from FlyingW..then hooked up all the vital components and dropped in a battery..

Stuck the ugly plastic tank on because it had gas in and pushed it outside.

Absolutely no hesitation to starting..now past the critical point.

Just left now is to hook up the exhaust, install all the 'pretty' like the new tank with decals, side covers, speedo..

The end is drawing near!

My wife said it sounds like one of those little push around baby toys with the little balls and the clear plastic dome..anyone old enough will remember those!

Well this weekend was busy so not a ton of progress to report..I did however get a serious bug up my ass because of the way the front end looked.

165402

It was a major interuption to the 'black on black' flow..I pulled it apart, wire brushed & sanded, black primer, then gloss black on the forks, brake drum/hub.

165401

It looks really nice..just hanging to cure for a couple days then back together..and I'll snap a front end pic or two.

I think will really complete the colour scheme..

Still waiting on the exhaust hardware and donut gasket..hopefully this weekend will give me the chance to tidy up the loose ends and get some nice pics.

Glad you painted the front hub/drum black ...I believe that was the finishing touch too. I'm really loving what you're doing to this ES !! I want a set of those wheels for mine now !! Tank looks great ! Thanks for all the pics. I have one question: did you have those rims shipped in from the states? If so, were you dinged at customs?

I foresee the shocks being painted black next :).

I had one of them poppers when I was a kid, and I'm not really that old ^.^.

I think the black and black will come out well!

I'm kind of interested in how the 250sx engine will react being on a 250es frame with 25 inch tires. I never seen confirmed fact on the gear ratios, but I have heard the trans is the only thing different, and others say the rear end is also different. If it is purely the sx trans, it will be around 10-15% higher geared than a normal 250es, on the other hand, it would be less if the rear end is also different for gearing. It should be a fast big red when your done :D.

Thanks Woodsy..

All my part come from the good old USofA..I live directly on the border and have a legal US address, then import myself and just pay provincial taxes.

These one in particular came from www.rockymountainatv.com

I know they ship to Canada, but have no idea what extras you might expect besides your provincial taxes.

Oh yeah, the shocks are done..they are under cover to keep the dust off them while they cure. I didn't remove them from the machine..

165403

Yes, the 250SX transmission gearing is different..the ratio numbers are published in the repair manuals for the 2 machines. Not drastic, but a bit different..

Also the differential is different on the two machines..the combination of trans and differential ratios are what compensate for the different tire size between the ES and SX. I am using an SX engine on a ES differential..so I won't be that dramatic a final ratio change.

I figure that my application won't be any more problem than a guy installing some big huge 28" tires on their 250ES..many have done it and reported no problems.

Thanks to those of you that helped, both with comments and the badly needed parts for this machine. Especially Harlen for the decals and Cory for the desparately needed driveshaft and throttle cable..

Thanks, MAX..my brother is going the same for his 250ES..we just ordered a full set of the same but in silver with new Executioners.

He's coming down to my place in a few weeks to do his spring maintenance and install the wheels/tires.

Should be a pretty cool contrast with our two trikes together.

Mine with the black format and his the traditional silver..I'm sure he'll be posting up pics of his trike after they're installed so you can get the different perspective. His is gonna looks slick too..I'm excited to see it.

BTW..Rocky Mountain ATV has the best price going on the 12x7 ITP steel rims..got them for $39.99ea then just pick your rubber to go with. A full set for his trike was just under $400 delivered including the wheel nuts and 2 centre caps.

Well I took my project trike out to my parents this weekend to get some run-in time on the NOS engine..it ran great but there was a bit of a noisy from the rear end.

No big deal I thought, when I got home with a new bearing set in hand I pulled the differential and cracked it open just to find this..

166445

Trashed!! Man the PO was an azz!!

Anyway the lucky part..I saw an add on CL for a low hours BR being parted out and to contact with what I needed for price. I called the guy and it turns out to be someone I've dealt with before, I bought a snowmobile..a good guy.

So he said the trike still had it's differential and if I take it out..$125. I showed up and it's in perfect condition...

It goes in tomorrow..

Ouch, I have one of my beater machines making a noise back there too, I know the ring gear is missing 3 or 4 different teeth, just hop the pinion gear is good yet. $125 seems like a good deal for a good shape rear end, I know feebay ones run $150-500.

I scored one incredible 250ES rear diff from a guy on CL for $125..I had to go to his house and remove it. Showed up with a box of tools and had it out in 25minutes..

The differential was completely clean..in fact the entire machine he was parting was super clean. But the thing had been sitting for a number of years since his 75 year old neighbor, who was riding it and plowing his drive, was struck by a pickup and the frame (and him) is badly bent now..

I got out of there with a perfect exhaust, engine/transmission, carb, starter, front forks, rear swinger and brakes, battery box and all the electricals for a great price..

The motor was still in the bent frame. I took it home, hooked a tank up and kicked it.. it purred away on my floor for about 20 minutes, then I changed the oil and filter. Now the engine will come out and be shelved until I decide it's fate..maybe another 4 years in a box like my NOS until I find a project to install it in..

Anyway the diff went into my BOB trike and it's back in action..and I have a treasure trove of incredibly clean parts to keep me going for years!

I have a "repairable" frame if you want to get the machine back together lol. The only problem with the frame is the right foot peg mounting holes in the frame are worn out and oval shaped. I would be happy to get $10 out of the frame, currently its fate is the scrap yard. Frame is an 86, same frame as what my clean 86 engine is from.

I had plans to go just north of Detroit this weekend, but that might be off :(.

A frame would have been killer before the guy I got the stuff from striped it and Ebayed 80% of it..

This is all I have left:

Thanks Cory, its hardly worthy of a trike project..now if someone had a complete unpicked over trike with a bum motor!!!

You have some really nice parts there that is for sure.

The 86 frame is for sale to anyone if they want it, Also have a 1984 200ES frame, same story but isn't as nice, has rust around the rear end area.

Good deal..listen if you go to the SOS office with some kind of doctored up Bill or Sale, say from your Dad to you, then you can apply for title for the frames..it's really easy in Michigan. Cost you about 25$ per frame..

A titled frame is worth something, especially to some of the guys in the southern states!! Heard some horror stories of how tough it is down south. If you were to title them, oil them and hang them in your shed..a few years from now there will be dollars there!

Yep I have heard it is super easy to title them here, just never done it personally. If someone wants the frame as titled, I could do that too, not perfect, but usable for sure.

It's so easy to get a title in Michigan that I've done it and hold about 7-8 Michigan trike titles..and I'm Canadian!!

They'll hand them out to anyone!! It's crazy!

Rofl, I might see a titling service in the making :D. I have around 12 or so machines, have titles for 2... and one of the titles I don't even have the vin part of the frame anymore :( (tri-z with the front end changed to a quad).

So my brother came down to visit this weekend with his newly acquired 250ES..a really nice find and the condition was incredible.

We went over the entire machine, cleaned, lubed, inspected and adjusted everything..changed all the fluids.

They are ready for our Kearney event..

Darcy and I got the BRs out for a shake down before our big event in Kearney in 7 days..they ran great and are totally ready.

Now for an azzload of packing!!

Also found these on my parents property..fresh set dropped together and no mouse chews. I thought they made a great fixture..

On a bit of a tire report..the Executioners on his trike though a bit smaller actually outperformed the Mud Sharks on mine in the heavy spring clayment..a BIT!!

Anyone looking to buy Executioners will not be disappointed!!

Love the looks of you and your brother's trikes. The tires and rims really make em look badass. I hope to have a set like those someday. :)

Nice huh?

Do you reckon 12" x 7" 4.5+2.5 offset ITP wheels would be a problem on the back? I can't tell how much difference it would make from 2+5 offset.
Any input appreciated.

Another wheel related question. Any issues running a 12" wide tire on a 7" wide wheel? I'm debating on what tire/wheel setup to run on my Big Red. I would like to step up to a 26" tire for a bit more ground clearance, but I don't like losing 2" of wheel width by going to a 12x7 from a 9x9.

After a long sabbatical from the group, I thought I'd drop in and say hi.

Lots of changes for me personally..the main one was the passing of my father and subsequent sale of mom&dad's farm. This being the place I rode since the region I live in isn't terribly friendly to trike riders..no trails or public land for riding without a long drive to trailer there.

So as a result my build had been laid up in the back of my shop for 6 years..it's time to sell the old girl!

I got it out this morning, installed a new battery and fresh gas..then cleaned it up a bit.

It could use a good going over but I'll likely leave that to the next owner!

So I posted it on Kijiji this morning and we'll see what takers..for those thinking of asking, I'm in SW Ontario. Sarnia to be specific..

Trike on brothers..this will likely be my last post as it's my last trike!!

It was a pleasure reading your thread, thank you for sharing.
Sorry to hear of your loss, stay strong for those around you, and they will be there when you need to lean on them.

Never say never or at least "last trike", who knows you may move to a friendly trike area in the future and trike again.

Too bad Doug, thats a nice trike esp for Ontario. If i still lived there (Woodstock, family in Petrolia so not far from you) I'd love to buy it. Good luck with the sale and from a fellow canuck, party on!!!
