I need to know the difference between the 84 and 85 Tecate front ends. Dan and I are going to put an 84 front end on our Tecate 500 build and we've already got a lot of 85 parts. I need to know if the forks and triples are any different between 84 and 85. Forks the same diameter? Is there a "stay" or some kind of mount for the drum on the lower fork leg(s) of the 84 models? If so, is it different than the 85's?

You can just use the '84 legs. Everything including the tubes, and guts will swap over..

The only difference part wise is the long springs, lower triple, and legs are different. When I put the 85 front end on my 84 I just swapped the 85 lowers onto my 84 fork parts..

The protrusion in the first pic below on the gold fork leg holds the drum to the leg.

with all due respect......You're nuts. Put a disk on that bike, I have an '84 250, and the cable brake is not really confidence inspiring, it's spongy, at best. The 500 is way too much motor for that bike, and the drum was way too little brake for the 250.

First of all, Douglas, you are a scholar and a gentleman. That is exactly the info we were looking for here. Thank you.

Affirmative.

Put a disk on that bike

Negatory.

Ben, your timing is impeccable. I've been looking for 84 Tecate parts (front brake, all 3 hubs, all 3 wheels) for months now. i figured people would be giving the stuff away because most guys don't want the drum. I've come up empty handed for months until yesterday, when I finally located some parts. Not 24 hours later, you offer me up a front brake for free.

I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Thank you Ben, and I'll gladly pay for shipping if you want to get that out to us. You wouldn't happen to have 3 84 wheels would you?
