i have a 1985 250r with a nice state axle but the frame is junk and a 1986 roller with a bent axle. i want to build the 86r. will the 85 work? or do i need to change the swing arm on the 86 to a 85 the crappy part is the 85 bearing housing is junk. and the 86 has a new housing.

The bearing carriers are different, but the axle will swap fine.

And just make sure you run the '86 style rear sprocket.

WRONG!!!!!! an 85 axle will not work in a 86 carrier!!! sprocket is on the inside of the hub and will hit the stock carrier before the bearing shoulder hits the bearing,,,

^^x2^^..I was trying to post that yesterday, but the site was acting up. You can run all water cooled R axles in any year, but can not run the 85 axle in newer years. They hit the carriers.

ok i will go with the 85 swing arm, 85 axle and get a carrier for it. so i'm going to assume that the 85 setup will bolt to the 86. or can i go with the 85 carrier on the 86 swing arm.

you can use a complete 85 swingarm and carrier on an 86 yes BUT LETS REVIEW ,,,,

1. 85 is a one year only setup,, for the swingarm and carrier,
2. all rear beake calipers are the same on 85-86 atc250r;s
3. 86 carrier will not work in an 85 swingarm
4. 85 axle will not work in a stock 86 carrier
5 86 axle will work in an 85 carrier
6.85 and 86 carriers will not interchange with each other in either direction,
7. 86 entire setup is the same as 86 and 87 trx 250r
8. All year trx250r rear calipers will also work on all year atc 250r's

I have an 85 axle, but the rest is all 86. The axle is a lonestar axle so i want to run it. I am a machinist and was wondering if the sprocket hub could be pressed off and reversed ?

Lone star trx atc axle can be put in the 85 carrier they said you have to just run the 86 and newer sprocket. Im pretty sure RPM axles fit too. Maybe stock axles are not interchangeable. Got to trx250R.net they are all 250R only and people will respond on there I know its been discussed. I have a 85 ATC and would like to put in a wider axle. Lone star discontinued the 85 1+4 axle and now told me to run the 86 version.

Yep, I was confused on the OP as well, thought he was asking the other way round.. Thanks Kasey.

Jeff, You CAN run an '86-later style axle in your '85 with no issues. Run the '86-later sprocket. I have an '86-later DB Eliminator in my '85 right now.
