First of all, Run a rich mixture. I typically run between 50:1 and 32:1, so with a new engine Ill run about 28:1 or thereabouts (32:1 depending on oil quality). Run this for about 2 tankfulls.

Start it up. Gently blip the throttle between idle and 2000rpm or so. Do this for about 10-15 minutes, until the pipe and head gets decently warm. Kill it, let it cool. Do this 3-5 more times. This is called heat cycling.

When your done with that, change oil (if applicable), check that everything is good and tight, and take it out for a nice easy ride. Go easy on it througout the day. I would run atleast 2-4 tankfulls before I really started ragging on it.

i don't think 10 to 15 minutes on a air cooled 250r is a great idea ,,, maybe 5 or 6 ,,, watercooled is a different story... keep your hand on the head just make sure it gets warn but not tooooo warm,,,,

when i rebuilt m old air cooler, i started it up, ripped down the road into 5th gear, ridin the wheelies and pounding the piss out of it, then came home, let it cool, started it up, let it idle for 15 minutes, then went to bed, got up the next day and rode it all day normally...never blew up to this day...that was...uhh...maybe a year ago, or somewheres around that........of course, i wouldnt reccomend that, just do what all the guys are saying, its smarter.
