I had my engine apart, put in new piston and rings. Now that I have it back together, it takes FOREVER to get going. I pull and pull and it sputters for a split second, if I touch the gas it dies. After 4 or 5 times doing this, it doesn't even kick. I take the plug out, clean it off, put it back in and do the same thing over. Sometimes it will fire up enough to be able to give it gas, but not more than 1/2 throttle or else it dies and won't start. Today I actually got it fired up, and drove it out of the garage, did a donut in the snow, and it died mid way through. I pulled the plug right away and it is very black, from just a 10 second drive. It does not idle either.

I have checked the timing numerous times, the T on the rotor is lined up with the notch on the case, the O on the cam at the 12 o'clock position on the head (lined iwth the V on the valve cover), the | line on the black box in the CDI is lined up with the | line on the thing with the springs.

The bike ran fine before I took the engine apart, the plug was a little black, but not this bad. I don't know how the bike ran fine before but now it doesn't and I did not touch the screws on the carb. The local Honda dealership rebuilt the carb for me 2 rides before I pulled the engine too.

Anyone got any ideas, I'm so close to getting it running again, yet it seems so far away at the same time!

Here is a pic of the plug after I got it to run for 10 seconds:

if you took apart the engine, and replaced the piston and rings, timing is good, does it spark? does it get gas? it looks like its getting alot of oil, so the oil may be boggin it out, lean out your carb a bit and try that, then when you get it broke in, then richen it up a little bit, hopefully that works for yea

I did notice that when I pulled the plug there would be gas,, with a little brown mixed in, is that normal to have oil on the plug after new rings?

the | line on the black box in the CDI is lined up with the | line on the thing with the springs.
Did you do this with the F mark on the stator or the T mark? Needs to be done with the F mark.

Ahhh, ejc042 it was you who helped me get the timing straight last time, I appreciate the help!

I'll double check the 2 | lines tonight, and I'll snap some pics so you guys can tell me if the timing is right.

Just make sure you set the stator to fire "F" mark when lining those up.

I can't say that I know what the problem is but it sounds like your getting too much gas. If you know how you should try adjusting the carb so that its not giving the engine so much gas.

I finally got it running tonight. It was the timing I guess, I must have had the 2 | lines slightly off, cause I double checked it tonight, reset it it where it should be and it fired up first pull. Thanks to ejc042, and polabareus I leaned out the carb a little too.

You got her running. Now you can enjoy the ride.
