What are the best DIY engine upgrades for a 200x. I have done an exhaust, wondering about carb or piston upgrades......

What is your mechanical skill? How reliable do you want the motor?
11.5 : 1 piston (wiseco) with a mid-range cam (webcams) and a re-jetted 24MM Keihin is a great combo. If you wanted to step it up on the carb you could call Sudco and see if they have any 27MM Keihin's left. I think Shortline10 bought one from them about 5 months ago. That combo will be reliable power that you can still run on pump gas. On a 1-10 mechanical scale, I would give it a 4.
If you want to go balls out then I recommend a 12:1 with mid-range cam, 28mm Mikuni, advancing cam sprocket and a +6MM short rod. A lightened flywheel and crank are also great performance adders. This setup won't be as reliable as above and you will have to get other items (stiffer valve springs, flash chrome rockers, etc) and you are married to race gas. Great setup though. On a mechanical level, I would give this one a 7.

XR200 cam and XR carb will work. Be warned it gets expensive quick and its not gonna be no 250R lol. A Cam and a carb with 10.25:1 should be fine.
Them prices mods alone with it not needing anything else will cost about $50 to 100 for a new or used CAM, $50-125 for a new or used carb. $30 for a top end gasket rebuild kit nothing less then $100 for 10.25:1 piston kit and prob $50-100 for a bore job.

I bought a Keihin 27mm carb from DG this summer--a genuine Keihin, not the knock-offs you get on ebay for 30 bucks. I believe they still have them but you might not see them yet on their new website. Give them a call. It will cost you around 200 bucks and it bolts right up to the stock manifold. The inside diameter of the manifold is a bit small for the 27mm but I'm pretty sure manifolds from the 200XR are larger.

Eh my mechanical skill are good. I am confident in everything but splitting a case in half. And for that to happen I would need to look over someones shoulder one or two times for comfort that's all. If your information is as good as the exhaust you sold me, I should be just where I want to be. what do you think about the xr200 carb?

Splitting cases is easy. Just don't dump the gears off the shafts!

I am sure it is ;) Just don't want to go off half cocked. I actually have a '99 Kawasaki Bayou motor all apart but the case just waiting for a new top end. New piston and bore, and rebuilt head with new valves, seals, guides, and cam. I realize she has one too many wheels but she's a great all around workhorse and all around no worry extra machine I can put anyone on.

i did a upgrade on my x when it had a 4 stroke still in it. i ran a xr cam with a lighten fly wheel, ported both intake and exhaust ports (you be shocked how much of a difference it made), 28mm mikuni carb, cyl bored 3mm over, 10.25:1 wisco piston, and a bassani exhaust and toped it off with a oil cooler. i miss that engine. it was a great reliable peppy engine. then i decided to go 2 stroke lol

I'm going to assume tis is all for 1st generation "X's"? My 86 is still apart because I'm still broke but wondering if XR cam and Carb would be the hot ticket?

Yes, 83-85 only.
The 2nd Gen X doesn't have much aftermarket from what I have seen

Visited to weisco site, didn't see an 11.5:option. Did you mean 10.25:1 or am I not looking right?

how much $ do you have? that is the facts. the more you spend the more you can do to the 200x. no easy way around it. I got over $900 in my top end alone.

piston woudl be a 10.25:1 wiseco and a 26mm mikuni off ebay will work, then you have to tune the carb so count on finding jets for it.

Tuned on my first bike before, Just need a handfull of jets and time. It's all just a day of fun out plying with my bike and the kids so it's all good.

Cheaper to buy a CR 125 engine for $300 off CL, now THAT would be a good upgrade! My 84 200s had a 200x head, was not impressed.

Swapping a 200X head onto a 200S will not do anything shocking, So if you were expecting it to be night and day I can see how you werent impressed
