hey guys i just picked up an 86 250sx. the previous owner had removed the batery cz it was dead. So my question is that by riding it around with no battery in it would it have damaged the rectifier/regulator? were these bikes made to be able to run around without the battery? anyway i will be picking up a new battery on friday, just hoping i wont need a new rectifier. thx in advance for any info.

You should be fine. be sure to get a 12BS battery.

I am sure its fine but why not put a battery in it? The elec. start such a nice luxury

Great question.

I have one that we ran without a battery for years and it didn't seem to hurt anything.

By design, I do believe the battery is supposed to be in there.
In the old trail 90's, the battery acts as a power soak, capacitor and buffer
since they don't have regulators, just a rectifier.

This is true, however, the old Trail 70 / 90 won't run without a battery, so that is different.

Excellent point.
I guess a battery has to be in the circuit.
Was always jealous of 'regular' bikes that didn't need batteries.
