Gap between seat and gas tank 85-86r with maier fenders?

I have a 85 and 86r. When I put the maier fenders on with a 85 seat. I have
a one and half in gap between the tank and fender when I put the 86 seat on
There is no gap. I have seen plenty of 85r's with maier fenders and no gap
And I missing something I no the seats are different but the gap is way to much
