View Full Version : Smoking like Hell....and gas on ignition side (Tri Z) ????????

Ok...I searched and searched and did not find anything on this.

I am thinking both my cranks seals are bad.

1) On the ignition side I had an old stinky drip drop of gas dripping from the ignition cover! I took it off to find about an oz of old gas in the cover. I am assuming the ignition side crank seal is bad.

HOWEVER when I start the bike it does not rev up like an air leak.

2) On the wet clutch side: I am thinking this seal is bad too because it smokes like a train.

I just had both of these replaced but the bike sat for a year. None of my other two strokes have had seals go bad after sitting like this...

Any ideas?

did you use honda factory seals or aftermarkets? when it comes to seals, nothing outlasts the honda stuff. Don;t tell subaur, but when we build up my old STi engine we used honda seals everyplace we could. we took the seals to a friend at the honda shop and matched up as many as we could much better quality seals than any one out there..

Sat for a year?Sounds to me like a jet is sticking or fuel was left on? and fuel is running to the bottom end. It will take a while til it all burns out. Did you drain old gas and put in fresh?

More than likely the root cause is a bad fuel pump diaphram...allowing fuel to fill the crankcase through the pulse line. Then, when you kick it over, it creates more than enough crankcase pressure to push all the fuel that is sitting in the cases, through the crank seals. I would say rebuild the fuel pump, AND replace both crank seals. Genuine Mikuni fuel pump rebuild kit through P/U is part# MK52, about $15. That should solve the problem. You are actually lucky you haven't broken the clutch cover or bent a rod yet, trying to start/ride it with all that fuel in the crankcase!

grab ahold of the fly wheel and see if it moves up and down...if your crank bearings are shot .. even a new seal is not going to help.. and im gonna say your float stuck also.

Correct on the mk-52, I Think the part number they use now is DK-52 if I'm not mistaken!! Same part different part number for some reason. Will double check to make sure..

Thanks I am on it! I am getting the seals replaced here soon.

That sounds exactly like what happened. Can't wait to get riding again!

My z was leaking gas into the stator side also, found out that a few screws came loose from vibration. Or I just forgot to snug them up all the way, I was in a rush.

My rings seized up and it lost compression. I'm doing a complete overhaul top n bottom on the engine at the moment.

Sounds like the fuel pump is pumping gas in through the pulse line.

That is an AMAZING tri-z!! Absolutely gorgeous.

Every nut and bolt looks new. You want to sell it? =)

Thanks man...its hardly new...but I coated some of the bolts and nuts. I love it...

I had the motor ported by Jason Hall and I can't wait to ride it.

I've had it since 2003.... I love the thing!

Very nice bike. I just acquired a pair of these and was wondering if those were the OEM rear tires as those are what are on one of mine, but I read your comment about new tires a bit dissapointed. Sounds like a fuel pump rebuilt will be added to new rings on my list of preventative measures. Very nice bike once again.

The tires in the first set of pictures are from a banshee. The others are from the yzf 450. Rims are banshee."..with banshee hubs.
