My dad told me he had an 84 big red, that had 5 reverse gears. He said he had the tranny worked on, and that they had installed the additional gears for some reason. Anyone know if this was possible, or if he was just pulling my leg?

my stepfathers bigred 83? has 5 hi 5 low and he said he could of gotten a aftermarket part the cam out a year after he bought the bike (new) that would of gave it revese
now i could see this interfacing after the trans and giving 10F/10R

or even changing some grears in the trans to have a HI revese that used all 5 gears < mabie this is how it worked and that what your dad got?

Maybe, I'm not sure. All he said was that he had gotten one of his friends to work on it, and that it came out with the 5 reverse gears.

My memory is a bit hazey on this subject but I do remember ad's in 3wheeling about a reverse kit for the big red. I dont remember which year it covered but it would make sense that it was the model with the dual range gear selector. I would assume that it would add reverse but eliminate the low range option.
I will try and dig out my magazine collection this weekend and confirm.

I just dug out my old magazine stash and the reverse kit is advertised in like every issue. The company was called Paltech in Palatka Florida and they offered a reverse kit for 82/83 big reds for $99.00. It says 30 minute installation. Basically it changes the Hi/Lo subtransmission to Hi/Reverse.

He didnt have 1 forward, and 5 reverse. He had 5 forward, and 5 reverse. Also, Curtis-tecate, do you know if those 82/83 reverse kits are still available.

The Honda 200e had electric start and hi/lo. The hi/lo meant that it had 5 gears in hi and 5 gears in lo so when the reverse kit was added it would still have the 5 forward gears in hi and 5 gears in reverse. The Honda 200es ( electric start and shaft drive) can from the factory with a hi/lo/reverse trans.

the high/low/reverse is a second set of gears after the main 5 speeds. there is a linkage that prevent you from shifting into reverse in anything but N or 1, and prevents you from shifting higher than 1 in in R. if this linkage is broken, you will have all 5 gears in R.

I was just talking to my dad about it, and he mentioned something about linkage (or something like that, he was kinda mumbling) or that they had bypassed something, I'm not sure. I think thats what it was though
