I have the split the cases on an 85 r to replace the crank. Do I need any special tools? I know not to use screwdrivers to pry cases apart. Is there any tricks I need to nnow? I have split cases on tri-z's but never on an r. I do have a manual and plan to study it before I start, but you guys usually have a good trick or two that isn't in the books. Thanks,

Hey, i just did mine...and let me say....no manual needed if you have done tri-z's before, i have done both z's and all year r's, and i will say that the 85/86 R's are by far the simpliest.....very easy....i didnt come accross any challenges at all.........anyways, i didnt use no special tools, special splitters, or what not, nor did i use screwdrivers and pry bars.......... i simply took all the bolts out, grabbed the side of one case, pulled, and it fell apart, wasnt exactly hard work......on another one i did that was a little tough a took a soft rubber mallet and tapped the end of the crank a couple times and that made it fall apart
the only thing i can say is, make sure you remember where everything goes, LOL, and good luck ;)
I am a believer in using screwdrivers and or chisels to seperate cases. It helps me, but I am smarter then the average joe and don't sit there and make it scratch anything. Just do it gently.

Only difference from the TriZ is the counterbalancer which is real easy to figure out how to remove. BEFORE doing so, take note of the aligning marks for it!!! The counterbalancer is timed, and if its installed wrong, it will act as a debalancer. I made the mistake of not looking at the marks, and Howdy had to bail me out with a picture.
