I was wondering if anyone has had this problem. Took my tecate out for the first time in 9 months for desert season out here in Cali. Carb was clean, filter, had oil, and coolant. filled bowl up with gas and it fired on second kick right after unloading it. The next morning, made sure everything was good and fired it on first kick. it has always started on first or second kick for the whole 7 yrs that I have owned it. rebuilt the top end once. Went for a ride, opened it up and it ran like a demon. Was at gordons well, if anyone is familiar with the imperial sand dunes, climbed the hills a couple times and proceeded back to camp. on the way back I noticed it missing, or feeling like it was running rich. It was fairly warm, getting up to around 90 degrees. It felt like that when I first put the carb on a cuople yrs back and I failed to check the jetting. THe jets were way to big. after changing the jets it has been fine for the last three yrs. I checked the plug and carb. Wasnt rich. plug looked normal. tried cleaning out carb and changing jets due to heat. no change. cleaned carb out twice, with no change. still sputtered, and sitting at idle and opening the throttle, it would bog, then pick up, but holding it steady it would be fine, then sputter, then pick up, sputter, etc. very eratic. no rideability. as the day went on it got progressively worse. Finally, i kick the crap out of it and it wont start. Does this sound like fuel, or ignition. Has a 38 mm mikuni flat slide, and ricky stator which i had done back when they still had a shop that was walk-in. Or could it have an air leak somewhere? any Ideas would be great. I really dont think its fuel though.

I like to start with the simple things. Did you try a new spark plug?

I would get out the multi meter and check the stator before spending too much time on anything else. I have gone through 5 or 6 in less than 2 years and most of them had different symptoms.

How is the spark? Sounds electrical to me. If stator checks out ok go on to the coil and then CDI. I have went through a stator and CDI already this year.

I have an inline spark tester i can use. The reeds look okay. they are v force. soon as I have time after work I think i will check the spark. luckily i have spare coils and a couple cdi's. Compression is very good. it registered about 205-210.

Im not sure what the spec on compression should be, would have to check my manual but that seems kinda high. Unless you got some work done and running race fuel. I could be wrong here.
