hi. back in the 80's, my uncle and dad both built atc's with rd350 engines, slightly modified with built-by-hand pipes with a Hi Performance ATC frame. my uncle still has his, in good condition, and my dad and i are planning on taking it with my 200x up to silver lake this year. were almost set to go, we have some 10- paddle haulers (3x90 rims???) and i was just wondering if this engine is enough to compete with some machines that they have now, like 450's and modern banshees. my uncle has had the atc over a rumored 100 mph. thx for any input!

YES. it is fast enough and strong enough to keep up...in a straight line. better hold on too. just dont expect to be able to hit a berm track

The RD350 framed trikes were built using an aftermarket frame and honda parts. The company Hi Performance ATC used the same frame with many different engine mounts to fit a wide array of engines. They are hard to find here on the east coast, as is all the really cool things from out west. I have one in my garage I never have built. At one time out west, there were several companies that would custom build you a really wild rd350 engine as well as sell you the parts to build one. The Hi Performance ATC frame kit came with custom pipes to fit the rd (and r5) in the frame. The pipes can be the harderst thing to find. Many people have used DG and other aftermarket pipes and I'm sure there are a couple people who could hand build a set of pipes providing they had the engine and the trike together. I would like to say any and all pics you may have, past or present pictures would be excellent and highly welcomed.

the pics are from the 80's when my dad and uncle were up at silver lake. the rd350 is not finished in some of the pics, some pics are at the dunes, jumping the 200x, with the finished rd in the backround, and some misc. ones i found while looking through the family pic book. what is the white one in the garage, not the rd?

Very cool man, thanks for sharing.

Yes, those motors will keep up with anything new or old. Think of it as an air-cooled Banshee engine. I had a 77 RD400 with a fresh stock rebuild, some pod filters, and DG pipes back when I was 18 or so. It had plenty of satchel, I promise you that. Your limiting factor will by no means be the engine, but rather the chassis.

over 100mph seems a bit on the high. i see lots of built banshee around and not many can do >100mph on the radar gun

when they are done? sorry... unfortunately the only thing i can do now is take some pics before and after we clean up my uncles RD. my dad's was stolen about 10 years ago, along with my mom's 200x (never recovered). also, i dont know when im gonna be able to get some modern pics of my uncle's machine, but i will try

but you still need power to get higher speeds, you cant just gear your way to >100mps. a built motor yes, but a street motor in a atc put less power down to the dirt because its rotating more mass in the tires and axle. i personally wouldnt mind if it didnt hit >100mph i would still ride it and race it as it.

Those machines would have been frighting.

I've had Banshee's, that really were screamers; and to have similar power and light switch acceleration, on a trike, would be an adventure to say the least.

I've always had a passion for the fast 2-strokes; but it was motorcycles back in the day for me. The Banshee's came later.

I still have, in bikes a Honda 1974 CR250M Elsinore, and a couple of RZ350's (Banshee with a power valve and 2 wheels)

This thread really makes me think about the old days, for me.

Thanks For posting it.

I'm happy to post these pics. My dad has a RZ350 as well. They are becoming collectible and are few and far between since they were made for only i think 83-84 or 84-85. my dad's is an 84. non kenny roberts edition
